2023 has only just started but Range Rover has detailed the updated 2024 model year version of its sleek Velar SUV.
There’s a tweaked exterior design, more paint colour options, a larger infotainment touchscreen, and a larger high-voltage battery in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The 2024 Range Rover Velar is on sale now, ahead of customer deliveries expected to commence in the third quarter of this year.
The local Velar model lineup has been shuffled for the 2024 model year. The base R-Dynamic S is dead, and all surviving R-Dynamic models have been renamed Dynamic.
This means the starting price for the Velar has gone up by $9550 as the now-entry-level Dynamic SE P250 starts at $106,250 before on-road costs. The existing Dynamic models are now up to $7250 more expensive, too, compared to the 2023 model year.
There’s a new Dynamic SE D300 variant, which is priced from $123,600 before on-road costs, as well as a second PHEV variant in the form of the Dynamic SE P400e, which costs $132,800 before on-roads.
Slotting in above the Dynamic HSE variants is a new flagship Autobiography P400 variant which starts at $157,900 before on-road costs.
P400e PHEV variants are still powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 105kW electric motor, but now feature a larger 19.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Thanks in part to this larger high-voltage battery pack the claimed electric range has increased by 18km to 69km under the more lenient NEDC test cycle.
The non-PHEV powertrain lineup is largely unchanged with the sole P250 variant being powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 184kW of power and 365Nm of torque.
Range Rover says this engine is now mated to a “smoother-shifting” eight-speed automatic transmission.
The sole D300 variant is powered by a 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-diesel producing 221kW and 650Nm, and P400 variants are powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine producing 294kW and 550Nm.
Both of these inline-six cylinder engines have a 48V mild-hybrid system with a belt-integrated starter generator that harvests energy under deceleration. This is stored in a lithium-ion battery under the boot floor.
On the outside the 2024 Range Rover Velar has a new front grille design and a revised lower rear bumper. There are new dark accents too.
Range Rover has introduced new “Pixel LED” headlights on Dynamic HSE and Autobiography which have a “jewel-like” daytime running light signature.
These LED headlights are claimed to have three times as many LEDs as Matrix LED headlights, with each headlight featuring four pixel modules with 67 “precisely-controlled” LEDs.
These Pixel LED headlights are able to use speed and steering data to illuminate dark corners, and cast shadows around four oncoming objects to avoid dazzling.
At the rear are new LED tail lights that have a “super-red” illumination and a 3D appearance. They are complemented by the full-width tailgate-mounted third brake light.
There are two new exterior paint colour options including Metallic Varesine Blue and Premium Metallic Zadar Grey.
On the inside is a new, larger 11.4-inch curved touchscreen that’s powered by the latest Pivi Pro7 infotainment system.
There’s now wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a new wireless charger in a new stowage area in the centre console.
This Pivi Pro7 infotainment system features an eSIM and cloud-based architecture. Its software can be updated over the air without visiting a dealer.
The infotainment system also comes with Amazon Alexa integration and what3words integration, along with an app store that allows you to download apps such as Spotify and Deezer.
The Velar now comes with active road noise cancellation which is claimed to reduce overall interior noise levels by a minimum of 4dB.
There’s a new leather-free upholstery option which blends wool from Danish textile experts Kvadrat with Ultrafabrics polyurethane textile inserts.
Finally, four new leather colourways have been introduced. These include Cloud, Caraway, Raven Blue and Deep Garnet.
These are complemented by new Moonlight Chrome on the steering wheel, centre console surrounds and air vents.
