Alfa Romeo’s Tonale SUV is now available in South Africa with a new hybrid powertrain turning its wheels.

The Italian car is available in three trim levels, with local pricing stretching from R739,900 to R819,900.

Regardless of which version of the car you go for, the Alfa will be powered by a hybrid system consisting of a 1.5-litre engine and a P2 electrical motor.

This motor is capable of generating 15kW and 55Nm by itself but combined with the combustion engine the total output of the powerplant is brought up to 118kW and 240Nm.

The benefit to fuel consumption is a combined usage of 5.7l/100km, and it also leads to a 100km/h acceleration time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h.

Furthermore, the semi-electric setup allows for silent startup, regenerative braking, full-electric drive, and a new “e-Boost” mode which increases the torque on the wheels for better performance or efficiency.

Higher-spec versions of the Tonale are additionally fitted with a self-locking rear differential, electronic suspension, and Sport and Comfort drive modes.

In terms of equipment, buyers can expect a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.25-inch media screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other items range from dual-zone climate control to a wireless phone charger, adaptive cruise control, a rear camera, front and rear park distance control, and upholstery that is a mix of cloth, suede, and leather.

It comes with Matrix LED lights, too, paired with alloy wheels in 17, 18, or 19-inch specs depending on the model.

Driver aids then take the form of autonomous emergency braking, driver monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and lane-centre assist.

Buyers will also be given the choice to add extras such as a 360-degree camera, semi-automatic parking, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and heated and ventilated seats.

With prices for the Tonale ranging from the R700,000 to R800,000 bracket, Alfa Romeo’s new vehicle finds itself in the high-end crossover and mid-range SUV segments.
