2022 Mercedes EQS SUV: what is it?
Mercedes' electric offensive is well under way, and these latest shots show it testing its yet-to-be-named EQS SUV.
The 'electric S-Class' EQS has already been revealed, but this will be the higher-riding SUV version. It'll be every bit as luxurious, but will come with the ground clearance and chunkier styling people love.
The EQS SUV will be built in the USA in Alabama and there will also be a hot AMG version plus a super-luxury Maybach model too.
2022 Mercedes EQS SUV: what is it powered by?
There have been no confirmed plans for the EQS SUV's battery and motors, but it's likely it'll get a similar set-up to the EQS saloon. Its performance and range figures will be broadly similar too, although likely not quite as impressive due to its taller shape.
For context, the EQS saloon will be available in two forms: the 450+ and 580 4Matic. Both are available with either 90kWh or 107.8kWh of useable battery, but the former is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model and the latter a motor-on-each-axle, all-wheel-drive.
The 450+ with the larger battery comes with 329hp and 568nm of torque, while the larger-battery 580 gets 516hp and 855nm.
Mercedes says its brand new battery tech means EQS will travel up to 770km or 478 miles on a charge. This will be for the rear-wheel-drive 450+
2022 Mercedes EQS SUV: when will it be on sale?
It's likely the EQS SUV won't be fully revealed until 2022, but Mercedes has announced it'll be showing a concept of its Maybach EV SUV at the upcoming Munich show in September 2021, which might give some insight.
2022 Mercedes EQS SUV: how much will it cost?
It's too early for confirmed prices just yet, but the EQS SUV will be one of Mercedes' most expensive EVs when it goes on sale.
Mercedes has confirmed that its EQS saloon will cost from around £80,000 when it goes on sale, so we can expect the EQS SUV to start from around £85,000-£90,000.
