Mercedes’ in-house AMG skunkworks is busy prepping its upcoming GT coupe, seemingly set to launch in some markets with a choice of fire-breathing engines. Spy photographers have recently captured images of test mules — one in snowy northern environs, and one in a transport trailer liveried with logos of the famed Nürburgring test track.
While tricky camouflage is covering the noses of both vehicles, our sources say the yellow-roofed car is likely a GT 53 model, while the one bearing a white top could very well be a more powerful GT 63 variant. Both have enormous brakes but a clear differentiator hangs out in the aft section — the 53 has circular tailpipes while big-bro 63 wears trapezoidal exhaust finishers. Let the high-buck car spotting games begin.

Readers should know the AMG GT coupe will share a platform with the new SL-Class roadster, a machine packing all-wheel-drive and a 4.0L twin-turbo V8. Our own Graeme Fletcher tested the beauty in California for these digital pages late last year and heralded the SL’s return to its seductive roots.
While the roadster has been crafted for comfortable and luxurious cruising, you can bet the GT coupe will be tuned for customers seeking sportier driving behaviour (never mind the etymology of the acronym “GT”).
This platform-sharing gives us strong suggestions as to what’s under the hood of these GT coupe test mules. The natty SL is available with the aforementioned V8, offered in certain markets with either 469 horses or 577 of the finest German ponies. For now, Canadian dealers will only be hawking the latter, suggesting a similar arrangement may be in the offing for this upcoming GT coupe.
With the world moving to electrification, it’s logical to expect some sort of plug-in hybrid variant at some point as well, one which will likely make earth-shattering amounts of horsepower far in excess of these V8 options.
Whatever the output, one can be confident the GT will likely weigh less than the SL, given its mandate and place in the Merc lineup. Look for a debut sometime within the next 12 months.
