Ahead of the 2024 edition of the annual CAR Performance Shootout, we put one of the most potent Mercedes-AMG models through its paces. Here are the figures from our road test with the uber-luxurious four-door GT63 S E Performance.

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E delivers a jaw-dropping performance that commands respect in the fiercely competitive realm of high-performance sports cars. Weighing in at a hefty 2 348 kg, it might not be the lightest contender out there but what it lacks in weight, it more than compensates for with its brute power and precision engineering. Under the bonnet is a 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that is paired with an electric motor that delivers a maximum of 620 kW and 1 470 N.m.
This is delivered to all corners which results in breakneck acceleration. This German powerhouse can hit 100 km/h from a dead stop in a blistering 2,91 seconds, leaving most other modern-day sports cars in its wake (as a reminder, we test all cars with a full tank of fuel and a passenger). In around the same time our previously tested GR Corolla manages 100 km/h from a standstill, the GT63 S E Performance will already be doing 140 km/h, dispatched in just 5,10 seconds.
This all translates into an opulent cruiser that can traverse the quarter-mile in 10,78 seconds, clocking in at 211,56 km/h at the line. The one-kilometre mark is achieved in a mind-blowing 19,63 seconds, with 268,96 km/h signalled on our test equipment. These numbers clearly underscore the GT63 S E’s prowess in the acceleration department.

In-gear acceleration is equally awe-inspiring. This model can surge from 40 to 60 km/h in a mere 0,54 seconds and effortlessly catapult from 60 to 80 km/h in just 0,61 seconds. From 80 to 100 km/h, it takes a brisk 0,76 seconds, making it clear that this car’s acceleration capabilities aren’t limited to standstill launches. Even in the mid-range, it remains a force to be reckoned with, conquering the 100-120 km/h and 120-140 km/h sprints in a rapid 1,04 seconds each.
Braking performance, another critical aspect, is equally commendable. The GT63 S E can come to a stop in its best time of 2,64 seconds, underscoring its ability to bring all that speed to a controlled halt. Even at its worst, it stops in 2,99 seconds, which is quite impressive given the incredible speeds it’s capable of achieving. On average, it takes a mere 2,78 seconds to bring its heft to a halt, covering an average distance of 36,29 meters while doing so. These figures highlight the car’s effective and reliable braking system, ensuring both power and safety are top priorities.
