Opel is giving its classic small car Corsa a facelift that comes with some technical changes to the electric version. The battery-electric Corsa-e, which Opel now calls Corsa Electric, gets more power and an improved battery for more range – with an important change to the other Stellantis models.
The update to the new drive generation is familiar from numerous Stellantis models, such as the Corsa counterpart Peugeot e-208 or at Opel with its other electric car, the Mokka Electric (formerly: Mokka-e). The 100 kW electric motor from Vitesco Technologies was discarded and replaced by a 115 kW electric motor from the Stellantis-Nidec joint venture, and the 50 kWh battery was increased to 54 kWh with a new generation of cells. In the new Corsa Electric, the new 115 kW variant manages a range of up to 402 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.
The new Corsa Electric comes with options. The 100 kW drive previously offered for the Corsa-e remains in the range, while the 115 kW model is added as an option. Opel is thus the first Stellantis brand to offer two electric drives for an e-CMP model. According to Opel, the WLTP range of the 100 kW version is improved to up to 357 kilometres.
While most Stellantis electric models simply introduced the new powertrain, the update for the Corsa comes with a complete facelift. The look of the small car has been adapted to the current Opel design language, such as headlights accompanied by a new black element at the front that forms the brand-typical ‘Opel Vizor’. The styling at the rear has also been revised. For the headlights, there was not only a new look but according to Opel, the glare-free Intelli-Lux LED Matrix light has also become even better and more precise, and now includes 14 instead of eight controllable LED elements.
Inside the new electric car, the revised Corsa offers an optional fully digital cockpit based on Qualcomm’s “Snapdragon Cockpit Platform”. A touchscreen of up to ten inches is available for the infotainment. There are also new seat patterns and a new steering wheel design.
The first deliveries of the new Corsa are scheduled for the end of this year. Opel has not yet announced prices. At present, the Corsa-e with 100 kW drive in the ‘Edition’ version starts at 34,650 euros.
In the UK, the new Corsa Electric will, of course, be sold by Vauxhall. UK prices for the new Corsa Electric have not yet been revealed. The British Stellantis brand says that orders will open for New Corsa this summer, with first deliveries in Q4 2023, but has not specified whether this is also the case for the version without exhaust pipe emissions.
