Opel has unveiled its new logo which is scheduled to feature on production models from as early as 2024.
The iconic emblem, known as the Blitz in German, will retain its lightning-bolt appearance but has been modified to give it a cleaner and more futuristic look befitting the brand’s trajectory.
“The lightning bolt is closely associated with electricity and is the ideal emblem to symbolise Opel’s approach to the era of electromobility,” said the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker.
“Our ‘Blitz’ is more relevant than ever before. It not only symbolises our commitment to the democratisation of innovation and mobility but also conveys our commitment to becoming a fully-electric brand in Europe by 2028.”
The lightning bolt, which is now subtly split into two parts, is positioned to intersect the supporting outer ring, which Opel refers to as its “compass.”
While the new look will only start to appear on production models from 2024 onwards, the logo will feature prominently at motor shows around the world starting with the IAA Mobility Show in Germany, giving the public its first taste of the automaker’s design philosophy going forward.
Opel in South Africa
Opel has long been a fan-favourite brand in South Africa owing to classic models like the Corsa, which are still going today.
In fact, the Corsa was the most recent Opel to be updated, welcoming the return of the more affordable Lite specification at an asking price of R349,900.
The manufacturer currently has seven vehicles to choose from, including the aforementioned Corsa hatchback, the Grandland X SUV, the Combo, Vivaro, and Zafira MPVs, and the Crossland and Mokka crossovers – the latter of which was named a finalist in the 2023 South African Car of the Year Awards.
Internationally, the nameplate has 15 different battery-electric vehicles (EVs) on offer, but unfortunately, none of these are available on the tip of Africa.
