Two factors that entice consumers to purchase new cars are style and performance. Of course, price, fuel economy, and power also matter, but many car buyers want a vehicle that looks great and gets them to their destination quickly and comfortably. Alfa Romeo knows how to deliver a gorgeous vehicle that makes drivers feel like they can take on the world. But the luxury brand fails to deliver consistent reliability. That’s why Consumer Reports didn’t give any of the current Alfa Romeo models its coveted CR Recommended distinction.
Here’s a look at the Alfa Romeo lineup:
Alfa Romeo Giulia

Consumer Reports praises the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia’s ride quality, but that’s exactly what a luxury car should deliver. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 280 hp, provides a balanced, exciting ride that many sedans aspire to but can’t quite achieve. Its fuel economy — 27 mpg combined — is also a plus, especially given today’s gas prices.
Alas, that’s where the good news ends for the 2022 Giulia. CR testers aren’t impressed with the interior, which doesn’t live up to luxury car standards.
Consumer Reports’ review also frequently compares the Giulia to the Audi A4 and BMW sedans, and Alfa Romeo’s entry constantly fails to measure up. For example, though the ride isn’t uncomfortable, it’s not on par with other luxury sedans that make drivers feel spoiled.
Other criticisms include dashboard vents that are too low, a gear selector that requires the user to press yet another button to operate, and cramped back seats. Overall, CR’s testers think shoppers should save their money for a BMW or Audi rather than purchase a Giulia.
For those reasons, Consumer Reports withheld awarding the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia a CR Recommended checkmark.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
If your loved ones constantly nag you about your lead foot, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio might be for you. Consumer Reports is quick to praise this luxury crossover SUV’s 280-hp turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. They provide fast acceleration and smooth shifting.
However, drivers can’t expect that performance every time. It might happen most of the time, but there’s occasional hesitation, especially in situations where you can’t just stomp on the gas and go, such as when you’re in the city and sitting in traffic.
In addition, CR testers slam the “jittery” ride and overly “grabby” brake pedal.
The interior isn’t much better. Reviewers say the driver’s seat isn’t very supportive or highly adjustable, and the infotainment system suffers from frustrating features such as a rotary knob.
Overall, Consumer Reports thinks Alfa Romeo fans will adore the Stelvio but suggests others check out other luxury brands.
Can the Alfa Romeo Tonale impress Consumer Reports?
Although the 2022 Giulia and Stelvio failed to earn Consumer Reports recommendations, there’s still hope for the luxury brand. The 2023 Tonale has yet to debut, so there’s still hope for one Alfa Romeo model to woo CR reviewers.
One benefit the new crossover SUV will offer is a choice between gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Whether that option will be enough to help the Tonale succeed where its siblings failed remains to be seen.
