Monthly insurance costs for the new Proton X90 SUV

South Africans looking to own a fuel-efficient SUV with space for seven occupants will need to spend at least R1,805 per month on insurance, according to research done by TopAuto.

The cheapest seven-seater SUV in South Africa to feature hybrid fuel-saving technology is the new Proton X90, which is available in four specifications with prices ranging from R559,900 to R679,900.

For this price, you get a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine paired with a 48V electric system, which can produce 140kW and 300Nm while averaging 6.8l/100km on a typical fuel cycle.

Gear changes are handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and there are selectable driving modes for Sport, Eco, and Comfort.

All models of the Proton come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, a leather multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry and start, fabric seats, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with voice commands, six speakers, six airbags, hill assist, ABS, two front parking sensors, and four rear parking sensors.

Moving up to the mid-tier Executive units adds a 360-degree camera programme, tyre pressure monitoring, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailgate, leatherette upholstery, a wireless charger, a digital driver display, and a six-way electronic driver’s seat.

The next trim, the Executive, further gets 19-inch alloys, a hands-free electric tailgate, a Nappa leather steering wheel and seats, lumbar support for the driver’s seat, front seat ventilation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, two more front parking sensors, and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS level 2) with autonomous emergency braking, rear collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane centering control, emergency lane keep assist, traffic sign information, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, and auto park assist.

Finally, picking up the X90 Flagship will add a panoramic sunroof and ventilated second row captain’s seats.
