Proton South Africa has just revealed its new flagship vehicle in the form of the X90, a seven-seater SUV with a hybrid powertrain.
With a starting price of R559,900, the Proton has the accolade of being the most affordable seven-seater hybrid in the country.
“We are excited to be introducing the Proton X90 to our market,” said CMH Group CEO Jebb McIntosh.
“The Proton X90’s arrival marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to delivering unparalleled driving experiences.”
Engine
The X90’s powerplant takes the form of a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine working in tandem with a 48V electric motor system.
The carmaker has not provided a fuel consumption figure, but did reveal that the seven-seater generates a total of 130kW and 255Nm.
This setup is then exclusively paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a front-wheel-drive layout. It also has selectable driving modes for Sport, Eco, and Comfort.
Features
Taking the prime spot above the X50 and X70, the new vehicle is the most kitted-out entry in the Proton family yet with four specifications, comprising Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship.
Standard features available on every model include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, a leather multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry and start, fabric seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with voice commands, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and six speakers.
It also comes with safety fittings including six airbags traction control, hill assist, ABS, two front parking sensors, and four rear parking sensors.
Moving up to the Executive will add automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailgate, leatherette upholstery, a wireless charger, an LCD driver display, a six-way electronic driver’s seat, and a 360-degree camera.
The Premium goes a step further with 19-inch alloys, a hands-free electric tailgate, a Nappa leather steering wheel and seats, lumbar support for the driver’s seat, front seat ventilation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, autonomous emergency braking, parking assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and two more front parking sensors.
Completing the package is the range-topping Flagship, which adds a panoramic sunroof.
