Mercedes has revealed its new full-electric EQS SUV.
The new car, not to be confused with the EQS saloon or EQA, EQB, or EQC SUVs, is the Silver Arrow’s first large electric SUV capable of seating seven people.
The EQS SUV will come to market in the second half of the year but extra-keen buyers can pre-order the soft-roader now. There was no indication of price, however.
The German automaker is hoping that EQS SUV buyers will use the EQS SUV to support their “active lifestyles” while also getting their high tech and in-car entertainment itches scratched with “holistic digital connectivity.”
In practice, this means that the EQS SUV has screens everywhere. Two large screens dominate the dashboard, while passengers seated in the second and third rows get headrest-mounted screens. Passengers will even be able to check out the incline and slip angles displayed to the driver when the EQS SUV is in its exclusive “off-road mode.”
Power is provided by a 107 kWh battery – the same lithium-ion cell used in the EQS saloon. Four trim options are available: The EQS 450 and 450+ are both single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setups while the EQS 450 4Matic has motors on the front and rear axles, and four-wheel-drive. All three guises offer 355 horsepower, but 419 lb-ft and 590 lb-ft of torque, respectively.
The EQS 580 4Matic, meanwhile, gets a whopping 536 horsepower and 632 lb-ft of torque.
Mercedes says the entry-level option should get between 333 and 410 miles of range on a charge, while the more expensive, twin-motor cars should get between 315 and 381 miles. The battery can be charged at up to 200kW on a DC system, from 10-80% capacity in a claimed 31 minutes.
Mercedes was keen to talk about how the EQS SUV was designed to be as slippery as possible with a range of design changes and improvements to reduce drag, including new wheel designs, tread patterns, spoilers, wings, and even narrower running boards and flush door handles. In fact, the car even has a flat undertray to help the air move past unimpeded.
However, the company hasn’t yet offered a specific drag co-efficient for the car.
Mercedes also mentioned that the EQS SUV enjoys entirely carbon-neutral production in the company’s US-based factory. In fact, the EQS SUV even has a completely sustainable supply chain, apparently, including its battery manufacturing.
