German luxury carmaker Mercedes has revealed the electric EQS SUV. The new Mercedes EQS SUV is the brand’s largest electric SUV to date and will go on sale in international markets later this year.
Mercedes EQS SUV Specs, Range & Dimensions
At launch, the Mercedes EQS will be offered in three guises – 450+, 450 4Matic, and 580 4Matic. The base 450+ features a single motor, rear-wheel-drive setup good for 355bhp and 568Nm of peak torque. The EQS 450+ delivers a range of 660 kilometres.
The EQS 450 4Matic upgrades to an all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup and while power remains unchanged at 355bhp, peak torque rockets up to 800Nm. The EQS 450 4Matic delivers a range of 613 kilometres on a single charge.
The EQS 580 4Matic is the most powerful version of the electric SUV that will be available at launch. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup produces 536bhp and 858Nm of peak torque. Mercedes claims the EQS SUV 580 4Matic will sprint from 0-100km/h in around 4.5 seconds while the maximum range stands at 613 kilometres on a single charge.
The Mercedes EQS SUV is based on the German luxury marque’s EVA2 all-electric platform which it shares with its sedan sibling. All three variants of the Mercedes EQS SUV make use of the same 12-cell 107.8kWh (usable) lithium-ion battery pack that supports 200kW fast DC charging.
When connected to a 200kW fast DC charger, the EQS SUV will recharge its battery pack from 10 to 80 per cent in just 31 minutes. The EQS SUV also supports 11kW three-phase AC charging.
The Mercedes EQS SUV is offered with air suspension with adaptive dampers as standard. All three models of the EQS SUV feature four driving modes – Eco, Sport, Comfort and Individual. These modes can be toggled by using the drive mode selector. All-wheel-drive variants of the EQS SUV offer an additional driving mode – off-road – which raises the ride height by up to 25mm.
Also fitted as standard to all EQS SUV models is Merc’s rear-wheel steering setup which allows the rear wheels to turn by as much as 4.5 degrees. This can be increased to as much as 10 degrees if certain options are checked at purchase or via an OTA update at a later date.
The rear-wheel setup enhances agility and improves stability in high-speed corners. It also cuts down the turning circle to just 11.9-metres (11.0-metres with the upgraded rear-wheel steering package).
The Mercedes EQS SUV is 5,125mm long, 1,959mm wide and 1,718mm tall. The EQS SUV is slightly shorter than its sedan sibling though the wheelbase remains unaffected at 3,210mm.
However, the EQS SUV is 200mm taller than the sedan and this along with the two-box design allows for the addition of an extra row of seats. While the EQS SUV can be had as a 7-seater, the standard setup for the new electric vehicle will feature a maximum of 5 seats.
Mercedes EQS SUV Design & Features
The EQS SUV looks like a raised version of its sedan sibling just without the extra boot hanging off its arse. The front is dominated by the faux grille design while the rear end features the lightbar style taillights.
Step inside the SUV and the similarities with its sedan sibling can be seen immediately. Like its sedan sibling, the EQS SUV allows owners to opt for Merc’s 56-inch three-display Hyperscreen setup as an option. Standard fitment is one again a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 12.8-inch vertically aligned infotainment display.
Speaking at the global unveiling of the new EQS SUV, Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG stated, “The EQS SUV is the third vehicle on our new all-electric platform. It has everything our customers love about the EQS – and combines this with the strengths and versatility of an SUV that can seat up to seven people. With the EQS SUV, we are continuing to consistently implement the strategy of making our vehicles more sustainable and digital – with the goal of building the most desirable electric cars in the world.”
Thoughts On the Mercedes EQS SUV
The EQS SUV is Merc’s largest electric vehicle to date. The EQS SUV takes all the best parts of its sedan sibling and adds the ability to go offroading. Add in the long-range battery pack and Mercedes could finally have a rival to the Model X from its erstwhile partner, Tesla.
