Mercedes-Benz is now manufacturing the new EQS for all of Europe, and in a few months, it will also be made in the United States. The star brand is inundated with orders for its premium electric sedan, indicating a level of demand comparable to that of the Mercedes S-Class. Unknown figures that have surpassed original forecasts.
Sales of the major Premium brands already exceeded expectations last year, despite the stoppages necessitated by Covid-19’s extraordinary health condition. So wildly optimistic were certain manufacturers that they declared victory, while others, such as Porsche, ventured to assert that there was no crisis in the premium category.
Mercedes sources have not repeated such phrases, although it would not be surprising if they did. Indeed, Harald Wilhelm, Daimler’s Chief Financial Officer, recently said that demand for the new EQS had surpassed all expectations for the star brand. According to the person in charge, “demand is comparable to that of the S-Class, and it exceeds expectations,” taking into account that the S-Class sold 62,306 units in the first three quarters of the year.
A demand they expect will grow before the end of the year, when the range’s sportiest variant, the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC, goes on sale with two electric motors and a top speed of no less than 761 horsepower. It will go on sale in a few weeks and the first units will arrive in early 2022. A complement to a line that is now only available in two configurations: the EQS 580 4MATIC and the EQS 450+, which has a single electric motor and rear drive.
The EQS is available with two batteries, 90.5 kWh and 107.8 kWh, providing a maximum range of up to 780 kilometers in the propulsion variant and up to 670 kilometers in the all-wheel drive type on a single charge. Naturally, not everything is roses, as the microchip issue is wreaking havoc. Orders for the two models equipped with the magnificent “MBUX Hyperscreen” option – which is standard on the 580 and AMG – will be postponed until the second part of 2022.
AMG, Mercedes’ sports vehicle division, will soon offer another EQS model. The EQS 53 4MATIC PLUS is the brand’s first series model to be entirely electric. AMG has enhanced the electric car’s performance by equipping it with 560 kW (761 hp) of power. The heart of the vehicle is its “performance-oriented driving concept,” which has one engine on each axle. Along with an electric motor and chassis geared for fast driving, a “heavy-duty” thermal approach should enable repeated acceleration maneuvers with constant performance.
