Mercedes Benz Malaysia has launched the new EQE 350+, its 2nd model series based on the EVA 2 electric architecture for large vehicles. With a retail price of RM419,888 (on the road without insurance), this business saloon is similar to the EQS 450+ in that it offers all the essential functions of the larger EQS but in a more compact form.
To carry the compact form, the EQE has a slightly shorter wheelbase (- 90 mm i.e. 3,120 mm) than the EQS, with shorter overhangs and more recessed flanks. The EQE measures 4,946 mm (length) x 1,961 mm (width) x 1,512 mm (height). The car is formed with Mercedes-Benz’s Sensual Purity design, reflected in the generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The overhangs and the front end are kept short, while the rear provides the dynamic accent with a sharp rear spoiler. Flushed with the outer edge of the body, the 19″ AMG light-alloy wheels, together with a pronounced muscular shoulder section, give the EQE an athletic character.
The EQE 350+ runs with an electric drivetrain (eATS) on the rear axle. The permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) churns out 215 kW (292 hp) and 565 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 6.4 seconds (top speed is capped at 210 km/h). With a 90.56 kWh lithium-ion battery, the EQE has a driving range of up to 669 km (WLTP). The battery can be charged up from 10% to 80% State of Charge in 32 minutes if you use a 170 kW DC (direct current) charger. Alternatively, 11 kW AC (alternating current) charging takes 8 hours and 15 minutes to take the SoC from 10% to 100%.
Mercedes-Benz had achieved a major step in the sustainability of the battery cell chemistry. The optimised active material consists of nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8:1:1. This effectively reduces the cobalt content to less than 10%. The continuous optimisation of recyclability is part of Mercedes-Benz’s holistic battery strategy and sustainability.
Furthermore, the innovative battery management software, developed in-house, allows for over the air (OTA) updates. This allows for the energy management of the EQE to remain up-to-date throughout the life cycle.
Like its exterior, the EQE 350+ also comes with AMG Line interior trim, with a sport steering wrapped in Nappa leather, and seats in Artico and Microcut upholstery. The entertainment system is packaged with a Burmester surround sound system, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with an OLED touchscreen running the MBUX interface. There is also a wireless charging pad in front for smartphones.
The MBUX is adaptive, with the control and display concept having the ability to adapt to its user and make personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the zero-layer design, you do not have to scroll through submenus or give voice commands. The most important applications are offered situationally and contextually on the top level in the field of view.
Available as standard in the EQE is the Driving Assistance Plus package which includes Active Distance DISTRONIC, Active Stop-and Go Assist, Active Steering Assist with Hands-off warning and Active Lane Keeping Assist.
Further, the built-in Navigation with Electric Intelligence feature plans the fastest and most convenient route, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style. This includes a visualisation in the MBUX infotainment system as to whether the available battery capacity is sufficient to return to the starting point without charging.
“2022 is an extremely important year in our electric initiative: with the introduction of the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQS and now EQE, we have the most comprehensive electric-vehicle portfolio here in Malaysia,” said Sagree Sardien, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
She added, “The Mercedes-EQ brand is pursuing a goal that is ambitious as it is clear: that we’ll build the most sustainable and most technically advanced cars in the world. By bringing responsible innovation to the road, we’re driving change. The EQE is the latest example of this – and it will make a powerful contribution towards the future of mobility.”
Meanwhile, Michael Jopp, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia added, “After the EQS, the EQE is already the second model on our new platform for luxury segment. The EQE is the next all-purpose electric luxury sedan with the typical One-Bow-Signature Design creating fast lines and silhouette and through that a very aerodynamic and futuristic look. All of this makes the car more flamboyant and entertaining, more extraordinary and defines the next level of luxury for the Mercedes-EQ brand. With its dynamic driving experience and comprehensive range of Connected Services, the EQE is a perfect fit for the desires of a modern generation of customers. We reconcile innovation and emotionality with sustainability and we are actively contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.”
The Mercedes EQE 350+ comes with a 4-year warranty (unlimited mileage). The lithium-ion battery has a 10-year warranty (or 250,000 km, whichever comes first).
