Mercedes-AMG just released two new EVs, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 4MATIC and the EQE 53 4MATIC+. Both of the new EQE models are said to “offer a performance-oriented drive concept with two electric motors.” With an electric motor at each axle, the powerful electric drivetrain (eATS) offers a fully variable all-wheel drive and selectively sends power to each wheel.
The entry-level AMG EQE 43 4MATIC produces 476 horsepower (350 kW), while the more sport-orientated AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ gets 626 horsepower (460 kW) and 687 horses (505 kW) with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package. Torque figures, the EQE 43 4MATIC has an impressive 633 lb-ft (858 Nm) of torque, while the EQE 53 4MATIC+ gets an astonishing 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of torque and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) with the DYNAMIC PLUS Package.
Though there may not be a roaring V8 or V12 underneath these new AMGs, the performance figures are insane. The 0-62 mph / 0-100kph time for the base EQE 43 is just 4.2 seconds with a minimum battery charge of 50%, while the EQE 53 smashes it at 3.5 seconds and 3.3 seconds with the DYNAMIC PLUS Package. Yikes. The top speed isn’t too shabby for electric vehicles either; the 43 can achieve 130 mph / 210 kph, while the EQE 53 tops it at 137 mph / 220 kph and 149mph / 240 kph with the DYNAMIC PLUS Package.
The performance figures are fantastic, but what about the batteries? Equipped with new generation batteries, both the EQE 43 and EQE 53 have the advantage of quick charging capabilities – Up to 170 kW quick. That means, at fast-charging stations with direct current, these cars get 112 miles / 180 km of range in just 15 minutes. Also, thanks to an onboard charger, these AMGs can charge conveniently at home or public charging stations with 11 kW or 22 kW power.
Both EQE cars utilize the same 328V high-performance battery using the latest lithium-ion technology, giving them 90.6 kWh of usable energy. Characterized by having high energy density and high charging capacity, the batteries give the EQE 43 an estimated range of about 287-269 miles / 462-533 km and 276-322 miles / 444-518 km on the EQE 53 (WLTP range).
With all the performance data out of the way, how does the new EQEs handle? With rear-axle steering and fully variable all-wheel drive as standard for both cars, AMG assures there are no corners too tough to handle for these cars despite the heavy weight.
Torque checking at 160 times per second, the 4MATIC system is a step above the traditional mechanical all-wheel-drive system – Constantly distributing power between the front and rear axle to keep the EQEs responsive in any driving situation.
An AMG without a big roaring engine is a foreign concept for many. So how does AMG maintain the visceral experience? The AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE – yes, all caps. It is the soundtrack for both inside and outside to “emotionally enhance the dynamic driving experience.” Using additional hardware that includes special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator, there will be various sound modes for different experiences. Whatever these sounds may be, AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is “giving a new voice to electric mobility.”
