Limited-edition GT Track Series to outdo Black Series and GT Pro – but there’s a catch
Mercedes-AMG has revealed its most powerful production sports car yet, eclipsing the most menacing supercars the German performance brand has ever developed.
But unlike its GT Black Series and GT R Pro supercars, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series can’t be registered for use on public roads and will therefore be limited to track days and motorsport competition.
Strictly limited to just 55 units globally – a significant number in that it celebrates AMG’s 55th anniversary – the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series produces a ballistic 580kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
The sold-out 537kW Black Series is said to have formed the basis for the race-ready Track Series.
Both share the same 4.0-litre biturbo petrol V8, however, engineers from the Affalterbach company have squeezed out an extra 43kW and 50Nm thank in part to custom motorsport fuel-injectors and a specific engine tune.
The GT Track Series also features a Hewland HLS six-speed racing gearbox with adjustable differential to transfer power to the rear axle, while “comprehensively adjustable” four-way Bilstein dampers and individually adjustable anti-roll bars allow for more set-up options.
There are staggered width 18-inch AMG forged alloy wheels and other track-ready features include a roll cage made of high-tensile steel, an FIA-approved carbon driver’s safety cell, motorsport fire extinguisher system and six-piston brake callipers up front.
Weighing in at 1400kg, the Track Series wears a carbon-fibre bonnet, sills, rear bumper and wing, which is mechanically adjustable. It’s among a host of aerodynamics features to ensure downforce at speed, while a large air outlet on the bonnet helps guide hot air away from the engine bay.
Inside, ‘racing electronics’ include a race-specific traction control system and motorsport ABS, each offering 12 levels of adjustment.
AMG says the high-performance components on board the Track Series allow drivers of all skill levels, “be it racing professionals or gentlemen drivers, to quickly build up confidence in the vehicle”.
It’s also built without any creature comforts, so there are no electric windows, no sound-deadening materials and no unnecessary interior trimming.
AMG says sim racing experts helped design the Track Series’ exclusive steering wheel, which brings a wide range of adjustments along with a data-logging system and lap timer.
Mercedes-AMG Motorsport boss Christoph Sagemuller said expanding the brand’s profile with an exclusive club sports car was logical.
“Everything on the GT Track Series is subordinated to the performance philosophy that has been the dominating leitmotif in the conception of our cars since the founding of Mercedes-AMG 55 years ago,” he said.
“But we have even gone one step further, offering our customers not just an outstanding product with excellent performance and quality, but also a strictly limited special edition model.”
