Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C Available In Malaysia From RM1.6 Million

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced the updated Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C performance cars to Malaysians, with retail pricing starting from RM1,712,888 and RM1,555,888 respectively (on the road, without insurance). The AMG badge is synonymous with automotive performance, dynamic driving and exclusivity, and the GT R and GT C embody its core values.

At its debut four years ago, it not only turned the heads of customers and sports car enthusiasts, but also created new dimensions in the competitive environment. These new generation models will deliver an imcomparable thrill that our drivers experience on the road and track,” said Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia. From the back, the new look of the rear apron is striking. For the AMG GT C, the sporty black diffuser insert has been redesigned; the tail pipe cover is also visually redesigned and matches the shape of the AMG GT 4-door coupé. The AMG GT C has trapeze shaped twin tail pipe covers. Meanwhile, the rear design of the AMG GT R keeps its distinctive shape with the large, centrally positioned tail pipe cover with centre bar. It is flanked by two more black tail pipes on the left and right of the diffuser.

The carbon fibre roof, yellow brake calipers and prominent fixed wing accentuates the racing DNA of the AMG GT R. While the AMG GT C, on the other hand, comes with a panoramic sunroof and striking red brake calipers. The AMG 5-twin-spoke forged wheels and the AMG cross-spoke forged wheels for the AMG GT R and GT C, respectively, intensify the sporty character.

The design elements of the AMG GT R contribute to the inherent technical benefit, enhancing the driving dynamics. The low front section and the shark nose radiator grille lowers the vehicle’s back-pressure point, enhancing the flow of cooling air as well as the car’s aerodynamic performance. Two horizontal fins in the front channel airflow to the radiators and ensure that the increased cooling-air requirements of the AMG GT R drive system are met.

The AMG GT R also comes with the wheel arch liners with special cooling-air slits to ensure ideal airflow through the double wheel arch radiators. In order to optimise the flow properties of the wheel arches while improving the Cd (coefficient of drag) value, the GT R also features air curtains on the outside of the front fascia.

At a speed of 80 km/h in RACE mode, the carbon component, which weighs only about two kg, that is concealed in the underbody in front of the engine, moves downward by about 40 mm and changes the airflow. This improves the car’s Cd and also enables the AMG GT R to steer more precisely especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration.

Both, the GT R and the GT C adopt the AIRPANEL active air management system. This system has vertical louvres positioned in the lower area directly behind the front apron. These louvres are electronically controlled and can be opened and closed in about a second by an electric motor, to improve the airflow and consequently the aerodynamic performance.

The louvres are usually closed whether at top speed, under braking and when cornering at high speed. This position lowers drag and makes it possible to route the air to the underbody to reduce front lift even further. Only when predefined components have reached certain temperatures and increase the demand for cooling air do the louvres open and allow the maximum amount of air to flow to the heat exchangers.

The AMG GT R suspension is designed for racetrack use. Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on the front and rear axle are manufactured entirely out of forged aluminium to reduce the unsprung mass. The double wishbone concept holds the wheel firmly, with minimal movement.

Adopted from its motorsport heritage, the uniball spherical bearings on the lower wishbones of the rear axle are more wear resistant than wishbone bushings. Due to its design having no free play, toe-in and camber do not change even under high loads, giving the car more precise control.

The coilover suspension combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL makes it possible to influence the dive and roll behaviour as well as the grip of the AMG GT R precisely as needed to tailor them to personal preferences or to the particular racetrack.

In the AMG GT C, the sports suspension is also combined with the continuously variable AMG RIDE CONTROL. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adapts the damping on each wheel to the current handling situation, the speed and the road conditions.

Powering the Mercedes-AMG GT R is the AMG M187 4.0L V8 turbo engine; each AMG engine is assembled by a single technician. The engine boasts 585 hp and peak torque of 700 Nm. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The V8 engine has an official 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of just 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 318 km/h.

Having spent most of its development time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (a.k.a. the Green Hell), known as the world’s toughest race track, the AMG GT R is nicknamed Beast of the Green Hell as it went through the track in just 7:10.9 minutes.

Meanwhile, the AMG GT C has a performance level that slots in between the AMG GT S and the AMG GT R. Powered by the 4.0L V8 turbo engine mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission, the GT C produces a little less power – 557 hp and 680 Nm of torque from 1900 to 5750 rpm, but is not too shabby on speed (0 – 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, top speed of 316 km/h).

The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT enables adjustment of the vehicle’s characteristics, setting up the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. This integrated driving dynamics regulation expands the functions of ESP (electronic stability programme) to exact dosing of power distribution at the rear axis and the steering characteristics. AMG DYNAMICS calculates how the vehicle will react by sensing the speed, steering angle or yaw rate, and makes adjustments accordingly.

Inside, the two AMG GT models have the standard new AMG steering wheel buttons. These consist of a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned color display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke. The AMG GT R steering wheel is covered with DINAMICA microfiber while the GT C steering wheel has black nappa leather / DINAMICA microfiber.

Both cars have fully digital instrument display with the 12.3″ instrument cluster and the 10.25″ multimedia display on the centre console as standard. The instrument cluster offers a new screen design with the three AMG-specific display styles i.e. Classic, Sporty and Supersport. In Supersport mode, there is also extensive additional information specific to AMG, such as a prompt borrowed from motorsport to shift up in manual transmission mode.

In the centre console, the conventional buttons have been replaced by TFT displays that are easily switched with a finger tap. The display buttons are also supplemented by two rocker switches for drive programmes and volume control. The Beast of the Green Hell now comes with the AMG Track Package. It comprises a rollover protection system, enclosed 4-point safety harness for the driver, and a 2 kg fire extinguisher. The bolted steel roll cage of the rollover protection system consists of a main roll bar, a brace for mounting the harnesses, two rear braces as well as a diagonal X-brace in the rear end. The system further increases the vehicle rigidity.

Also available in the Mercedes-AMG GT R is AMG TRACK PACE i.e. a system that turns COMAND and a smartphone into a personal race engineer. The drive can be analysed in detail, using more than 80 vehicle-specific data such as laps, sector times on established tracks as well as on ones that are manually configured, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, accelerator and brake pedal movements as well as steering angles to assist in improving the driver’s performance.

Additionally, a new parking package option now comes with a front camera as well as the PARKTRONIC park assistant and the reverse camera, which increases everyday suitability when manoeuvring. PARKTRONIC assists the driver in parking and manoeuvring with visual and acoustic signals. It also facilitates parking and leaving a parking space in tight confines.
