Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its AMG GLS 63 SUV for South Africa, with a retail price of R3,154,000.
Its full model name is the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+.
The 7-seater is the “S-Class among SUVs” and will take its passengers from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, said the company.
This is thanks to a 4.0-litre, V8 turbo engine that puts out 450kW and 850Nm to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Top speed is then limited to 250km/h – but can be upgraded to 280km/h through the optional AMG Driver’s package.
“The new GLS 63 is a vehicle for those who are not willing to accept compromises when it comes to versatility, effortless superiority, and spaciousness,” said Johannes Fritz, Co-CEO for Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
Large cabin
Mercedes-Benz said the new GLS 63 has a “significantly longer” wheelbase than its predecessor.
“The resulting increase in space particularly benefits occupants in the second seat row. Legroom here is increased by 87mm when the seats are in their rearmost position, which also makes it easier to get into the vehicle.”
Features inside the cabin include AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel, illuminated door sill panels and black floor mats with AMG lettering, black AMG nappa leather seats, and a 3-spoke AMG steering wheel.
This is complemented by a MBUX infotainment system that includes “numerous AMG-specific features” and the company’s single-pane cockpit, instrument, and multimedia displays.
Voice control through the “Hey Mercedes” command is also supported, along with movement and gesture recognition.
On the outside, Mercedes-Benz has produced a “dominant and sporty” look that is headlined by the AMG-specific radiator grille.
“The vehicle comes shod with 21-inch, 10-spoke light-alloy wheels in tantalite grey as standard, with six further wheel variants with diameters of up to 23 inches available.”
Power
Another first for the GLS 63 is that the AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine has been equipped with an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator for the first time.
This combines a starter motor and an alternator in a “single, powerful electric motor”.
The result is an additional 16kW of power and 250Nm of torque which can be accessed by the driver for brief periods.
The company added that attention was paid to the 9-speed automatic gearbox to ensure it can produce fast downshifts – and it is able to perform multiple changes at once.
Mercedes-Benz said the GLS 63 can shift directly from 9th to 5th gear, or from 5th to 3rd gear.
Stopping power is provided by 400 x 38 mm brake disks at the front, and 370 x 32 mm disks at the rear.
“The standard-fit AMG air suspension with special spring/damper set-up and… Adaptive Damping System combines outstanding driving dynamics with high ride comfort,” added the company.
This system sees ride height lowered by 10mm in the Sport and Sport+ modes – and at speeds above 120km/h.
“To increase ground clearance on poor surfaces or on ramps, the ride height can be raised by up to 55mm at the touch of a button at up to 70km/h.”
Safety
Standard safety systems on the SUV include Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with route-based speed adjustment.
The Driving Assistance package Plus then provides Active Stop-and-Go Assist – which helps the driver stay in their lane and maintain a safe following distance up to 60km/h.
