Expect a reveal sometime this year.
The big Mercedes news today is the arrival of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE sedan, but because Mercedes hasn't really thought this through properly, an SUV will share the same name. According to the rumor mill, there may even be a station wagon coming with the EQE name, but that's not our focus for today. Today, we're looking at new spy shots from the northernmost parts of the world as the high-performance AMG version of the upcoming EQE SUV has been undergoing cold-weather testing. It's still covered in extensive camouflage, with only the rocker panels exposed in black plastic, so how do we know that this is an AMG model?
With no quad-exit exhaust system to keep an eye out for, allow us to draw your attention to the wide AMG wheels that hide larger, gold-colored brake calipers. The suspension of this model brings the electric SUV closer to the ground too. Unfortunately, there's really not much else that can be gleaned here, but we expect a smoothed Panamericana grille, EQE badges ahead of the wing mirrors, and a subtle roof spoiler. We can also see a panoramic glass roof here, and what appears to be a retractable tow hitch. The bumpers are sure to follow the same sort of look at existing electric AMGs too.
We don't yet know what kind of figures to expect from the AMG-fettled Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, but it's quite likely that the sedan foreshadows what is coming for the tall pavement pounder. In the sedan, a 328-volt, 90.6-kilowatt-hour battery powers AMG-specific synchronous electric motors on each axle. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package, you gain access to a boost function that unlocks up to 677 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque for a short period. Under regular driving conditions, those figures drop to 617 hp and 701 lb-ft, but that's still plenty. We expect more details to emerge soon, with a full reveal expected this year as a 2023 model.
