Mercedes-Benz has given its EQE electric sedan the AMG treatment and the result is the Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 and EQE 53 with the latter boasting a max power output of 687bhp and 1,000Nm of peak torque.
Visually, these might be the most subdued AMG cars to come out of the Affalterbach, with only subtle AMG badging to even differentiate them from the standard car. Prominent differences between the regular EQE and the AMG variants include the panel between the headlamps mimicking the look of AMG’s signature Panamericana grille, revised bumpers, a new set of alloy wheels and, of course, AMG badging.
Inside a standard EQE, one feels like they’ve time-travelled a few decades. The AMGs carry the same cabin but with their own tweaks. Sportiness is at the core, with AMG-sport seats available in Nappa Leather or Artico artificial leather with microfibre and red stitching. Peppered with AMG badging, the car will not let its occupants forget they are in a high-performance car. Optional Hyperscreen can also be added, which integrates three screens under a single unit of glass stretching the whole dashboard measuring 56 inches. These act as the interface for Merc’s MBUX infotainment setup.
Mercedes has focused extra on the safety of the car with a massive array of active and passive safety features already in the standard EQE. The cars get a crash-protected battery pack. In an electric car, the biggest crash risk is of the battery exploding or catching fire, but this battery is inside the body shell with aluminium on the side. Active monitoring of temperature, voltage and insulation is done to maximise safety.
Coming to the primary task of AMG cars, performance. The Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 4MATIC is powered by dual motors with a combined power of 476bhp and 858Nm of torque. This translates to a 4.2 second 0 to 100kmph sprint time and a top speed of 210kmph. These two electric motors are AMG-specific, and it is not only the power but stringent tests to make them efficient and silent while providing AMG-standard performance.
For the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+, the car gets two motors with a combined power of 626bhp and 950Nm of torque. This car has a quicker acceleration time of only 3.5 seconds and a higher top speed of 220kmph. Here too, the AMG-specific motors have been fitted with adapted windings and laminations, higher currents and a special inverter, providing higher engine speeds. The rear axle motor is a six-phase design. The AMG Dynamic Plus Pack boosts the power up to 687bhp, a quicker acceleration time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 240kmph.
Battery for both the cars is a 90.6kWh pack with a 328V output meant for AMG use. Driving modes are able to enhance the battery performance, with Sport extracting speed and acceleration. With a 170kW charger, the battery is good for 180km in only 15 minutes. The range is claimed to be 462km-533km for the EQE 43 and 444km-518km for the EQE 53.
AMG-tuned air-suspension, 4-wheel steering, AMG Ride Control+, fully variable 4MATIC and 4MATIC+, intelligent energy recovery, adaptive adjustable damping, AMG Dynamic Select and many other specific upgrades make the cars fast, better handling and, above all, high-performance EVs.
