The British off-roading SUV manufacturer Land Rover has launched the third iteration of its highly celebrated SUV – the Defender 130. The New eight-seater Defender 130 will be available in SE, HSE, X-Dynamic and X specifications, in addition to a First Edition. The highly capable off-roader has been launched at a price of £73,895 (Rs 72.3 lakh).
Speaking on the launch of the new Defender 130, Nick Collins, Executive Director, Vehicle Programmes, Land Rover said, “New Defender 130 brings a new dimension of capability to our most durable and rugged family of vehicles. Its spacious interior welcomes and transports up to eight people in supreme comfort, enabling unparalleled sophisticated adventuring opportunities for families, with unique design signatures to create a distinct New Defender experience.”
The exterior of the new Defender 130 boasts the iconic silhouette of the SUV. Apart from the extended rear overhang, the design of the SUV remains pretty much the same as the outgoing Defender 90 and 110. Dimensionally, the Defender 130 has been extended by 340mm at the rear to provide enhanced interior space across all three rows. It is from the sides that one can tell where the Defender 130 differs from the previously launched models. With its 5,358mm length the Defender 130 triumphs over every other luxury SUV in terms of sheer size.
With the two rows of rear seats folded, the increased length creates a massive 2,516-litre cargo area. This is 953 litres more than the 110 in the identical setup. More importantly, it offers a novel two-three-three seating configuration as an option, making the Defender Europe’s only major SUV capable of transporting more than seven adults.
The vast rear cargo compartment remains intact, and a body-colour hard-shell cover for the spare wheel will be available. Roof rails in Narvik Black will be standard, and Defender’s entire range of external accessories, including the Explorer, Adventure, Country, and Urban packs, will be available as well. The 130 will also get an optional Extended Bright Pack which will include all lower body panels finished in Ceres Silver Satin and front and rear skid plates in Noble Chrome, complemented by Gloss Black lower bumpers and wheel arch extensions.
Moving on to the interior of the new Defender 130 gets a new Natural Light Oak wood veneer, chrome air vents, seat switches, tan leather seats, and a dual-tone Robustec fabric option. It also comes with a bigger 11.4-inch Pivi Pro curved glass touchscreen, which was first seen on the Defender 90 and 110 V8. It comes in five trim levels: SE, HSE, X-Dynamic, X, and the limited-run First Edition, which comes in three unique colour combinations and has a ton of options already selected from the factory.
As for the drivetrain options, Land Rover offers a ton of variants for the Defender 130. The options in petrol variants include the P300 – 3.0-litre six-cylinder, MHEV producing 300PS and 470Nm torque at 1,500-4,250 rpm and the P400 – 3.0-litre six-cylinder, MHEV churning 400PS and 550Nm torque at 2,000-5,000 rpm. Meanwhile the diesel options include D250 – 3.0-litre six-cylinder, MHEV, with 250PS and 600Nm torque at 1,250-2,250 rpm, or the D300 – 3.0-litre six-cylinder, MHEV with 300PS and 650Nm torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm. Every Defender 130 comes equipped with Land Rover’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) system and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission as standard.
It also comes with Electronic Air Suspension with Adaptive Dynamics and Land Rover’s advanced Terrain Response system. The Electronic Air Suspension system allows the Defender 130 for up to 430mm of articulation, with 71.5mm of additional lift at the front (73.5mm at the rear) in off-road height to clear obstacles and assist when wading – Defender 130 will ford up to 900mm of water. The Defender 130 also provides a towing capacity of up to 3,000kg.
