Land Rover Defender 110 Launched In Malaysia; Only Petrol Versions Available

Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia has officially launched the new Land Rover Defender 110 in Malaysia with 2 choices of petrol powertrains i.e. the 2.0L P300 and 3.0L P400 MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle). Both of them are Ingenium petrol engines that are paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and a twin-speed transfer box.

The 2.0L Ingenium is a 4-cylinder direct-injection engine capable of 300 PS @ 5,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque @ 1,500 – 4,500 rpm, while the 3.0L is a 6-cylinder engine with twin scroll turbo and a 48V supercharger to provide 400 PS @ 5,500 rpm and 550 Nm @ 2,000 – 5,000 rpm. Official 0 – 100 km/h sprint times are 8.1 seconds and 6.1 seconds respectively.

Built on the new D7x body architecture, it is built based on a lightweight aluminium monocoque construction, and engineered to withstand Land Rover’s Extreme Event Test procedure of repeated and sustained impacts, above and beyond the normal standard for SUV and passenger cars. This is the toughest one it has ever made, according to Land Rover.

The Land Rover Defender’s sturdiness allows it to carry heavy loads on its roof rack (static roof load of 300 kg) and tow loads up to 3,500 kg. With a wheelbase of 3,022 mm (99 mm longer than the Discovery), the Defender 110 has a breakover angle of 28 degrees. Its minimal overhangs allow for an approach angle of up to 37.5 degrees in the front, and a departure angle of up to 40 degrees in the rear. Furthermore, it is supported by a new Wade programme within the Terrain Response system that allows for a maximum wading depth of 900 mm.

The Defender has a ground clearance of 291 mm, and its ride height and driving dynamics are aided by electronic air suspension. The system’s adaptive dampers monitor body movements up to 500 times per second and respond almost instantaneously to optimise control and comfort on the road and off. The air suspension helps provide an off-road ride height lift of 75 mm to offer ride comfort on various terrain. An additional 70 mm of lift means the air system can raise the body by a maximum of 145 mm when needed. Additionally, the Elegant Arrival mode automatically lowers the body by 40 mm to aid ingress and egress when stopped.

Other useful features for both on- and off-road include a 3D Surround Camera with new 3D exterior perspectives and a 360° overhead view for easier manoeuvring. Another useful one, particularly for off-road, is the innovative ClearSight Ground View which provides you a view of the terrain just below and in front of the vehicle. Another ClearSight item is the rear-view mirror which gives you the choice of using a roof mounted rear-facing wide angle camera when your cabin is piled high with cargo or very tall people.

Besides the boxy, upright stance, Land Rover’s designers have retained some familiar Defender trademarks such as the Alpine windows, chamfered roofline, side hinged tailgate, and rear mounted spare wheel. Modern touches on the exterior include Matrix LED headlights with daytime running lights, LED tail lights, heated side mirrors with approach lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The cabin is a far cry from yesteryear’s, with plenty of plush, modern conveniences, including a new Pivi Pro infotainment system with a 10″ touchscreen connected to a Meridian Sound System, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and the ability to connect 2 phones simultaneously. There is also a head-up display, and a Click and Go System integrated base unit for the integration of additional accessories to hold bags, laptops or jackets.

The Defender has a rear cargo volume of 1,075 litres that expands up to 2,380 litres and a maximum of 900 kg. There is also the option of choosing either a 5 or 5+2 seating configuration, depending on your preference. The 2nd row seats of the 5-seater option fold 40:20:40 for more carrying versatility, while the 5+2 version has 60:40 load through rear seats with manual slide and recline.

Safety features include Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Blind Spot Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, and power operated child locks, besides the usual ABS, EBD, etc. Driving assistance includes Clear Exit Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Driver Condition Monitor, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Collision Monitor, Rear Traffic Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Speed Limiter, Wade Sensing, and Trailer Stability Assist.

The retail prices start from RM798,800 (2.0L) and RM998,800 (3.0L MHEV). The prices are inclusive of 50% Penjana Sales Tax waiver, but excludes road tax, registration and insurance).
