Is Mercedes-AMG more expensive to fix than the performance models from Audi and BMW? We did a quick price comparison of parts to find out.
It goes without saying that repairing any of the premium brands will be more expensive than their non-performance counterparts. If you own a performance model, chances are you’ll drive it like you stole it, and that means you will have to be very diligent and keep to the timetable of your car’s service intervals. Usually, there’s more wear and tear on performance models, too, and this also contributes to more expensive parts and higher servicing costs.
So, how does Mercedes-AMG compare to its rivals? We used the AA’s 2021 Spare Parts Pricing Guide which can be downloaded here.
(This handy guide covers a variety of non-premium cars from different segments.)
In the Sport Executive category, the AA compares the A35 hatch to the Audi S3, BMW M235i, Honda Civic Type R and the Renault Mégane RS300 Trophy.
As you can see in the image below, the Mercedes-AMG A35 had one of the lowest parts basket percentages of the total retail price: 28% vs BMW’s 29% and Audi’s 35%. Servicing parts pricing is lower than the RS300 Trophy and the Civic RS, but higher than the M2351 and S3.
.
As for maintenance parts pricing, the A35 is the cheapest of the lot with R34 574.23 while the S3 is almost double the price. The M235i maintenance parts cost is priced at R48 512.19.
With regard to body repair parts, the A35 is the second most expensive at R210 707.43 while the Civic RS takes the cake with a whopping R331 501.24. The Renault’s body repair parts are the least expensive at R170 846.51.
Total of all parts – from least to most expensive
Well, this is rather interesting – who knew that Honda’s Civic Type R’s parts would be so pricey? And it’s rather a big jump from Mercedes-AMG to Audi as well:
1. Megane RS300 Trophy, R233 774.98
2. BMW M235i, R246 993.93
3. Mercedes-AMG A35 hatch, R257 798.65
4. Audi S3, R 286 461.55
5. Honda Civic Type R, R478 248.27
Verdict
Yes, Mercedes-AMG is expensive to repair with regard to parts but not much more than BMW – but also not as much as Audi. However, one has to keep in mind that labour costs have not been included in this comparison. Call your local Mercedes-AMG dealership to find out what servicing costs and hourly labour rates will be for a specific AMG model.
