We cover the steps required to successfully change the 12-volt battery in a Mercedes-AMG GLC Class (X253/C253) (2015 – 2022). This task requires specific tools to complete.
Ever get that sinking feeling when you push the start button and nothing happens? That’s a dead battery that’s arrived to ruin your day. If your car is the only one available, you’re going to have to call a friend to bring you a new battery. Best you fire up Uber in the meantime.
If you can get away and are able to buy a new battery, you don’t have to stress about booking an appointment at your local dealership, you can tackle this task yourself. But be warned, there are some specialized tools required to get this right.
You will need:
– 10mm socket
– Socket extension
– T45 Torx bit
– Replacement battery (type: 115 AGM)

1. Open the bonnet and locate the battery. On the GLC it is under the plastic cowling, ahead of the passenger (RHD market).

2. Remove the plastic cowling by twisting the plastic fasteners.

3. Undo the clips to the cabin filter housing and pull it away from the firewall.

4. Undo the negative terminal (NEG/Black/-) with a 10mm socket and remove the terminal from the post.

5. Undo the positive terminal (POS/Red/+) with a 10mm socket and remove the terminal from the post.

6. Carefully unclip the vent tube on the side of the battery.

7. Undo the retaining bracket with the T45 Torx bit and socket extension. Move the loose bracket out of the way.
8. Remove the old battery with the supplied handles.
9. The installation of the new battery is the reverse of the removal. Note that you will have to reset electronics in the vehicle, such as presets and radio stations.
