The 2022 Land Rover Defender Trophy Edition has a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric supercharger and 48-volt hybrid system. According to Car and Driver, it pumps out 396 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.
My time was mostly spent on muddy off-roading trails, but I could tell that it has a peppy acceleration. It can reach 0 to 60 mph in about 6.7 seconds. The transmission provides smooth gear changes, and the brakes are confident and predictable.
Typically, vehicles built for off-roading have a bit of a bouncy ride and interior noise. I didn’t go above 50 mph, but the interior was noticeably quiet. You could feel imperfections in the road but in a good sense. Instead of being jostled around, I felt connected and in control.
The steering is light and responsive, and there isn’t any noticeable body roll around curves. While climbing over obstacles, the Defender feels stable and well planted. It continues forward even when wheels are off the ground. Also, the Defender is agile and easy to maneuver on tight wooded trails.
With hill descent control, the Defender crawls down steep inclines without slipping. I used the Snow and Mud/Ruts modes for slippery obstacles in slick red mud and three inches of snow. Both functions provide the optimal torque to dominate obstacles while preventing slippage.
While the Defender feels sporty, comfortable, and fun, it also feels safe. You can trust this SUV to get you from point A to point B.

The 11.4-inch touchscreen and digital gauge cluster have bright and attractive graphics. The system responds quickly and displays crucial off-roading information such as your pitch and roll. But the buttons could be a bit more intuitive.
It took a few minutes to learn how to change the off-roading modes, lower or lift the suspension, and turn on the heated seats. Instead of having a heated seat button, you hold the temperature dial down then turn it to your preferred heat level.
But if the biggest problem is having to figure out the tech, then the Land Rover Defender 110 isn’t bad at all. It’s one confident and comfortable off-roading beast.
