Jaguar Land Rover is on the verge of launching a new car cabin air filtration system that could make its cars COVID-proof. At this stage the new system is in prototype form but laboratory testing has so far shown it can inhibit up to 97% of airborne viruses and bacteria – including viruses within the coronavirus family.
In fact when it comes to specifically targeting coronavirus-style viruses, tests suggest it can inhibit up to 99.99% of the harmful molecules.
The as-yet-unnamed filtration system uses something called nanoe X technology, created by Panasonic, which uses a high voltage to create something known as Hydroxyl (OH) Radicals in minute droplets of water. These OH Radicals have the power to denature viruses and bacteria proteins which stops them growing, attacking them as enter the car through the air system.
As an added bonus, the system also deodorises the air, which all means future JLR models could be both very clean and pleasant environments to ride out a pandemic in.
Dr Steve Iley, Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Medical Officer, said: “Our customers’ wellbeing is of paramount importance to us – and now, more than ever, we are all looking for technological solutions that can help take care of our loved ones. The independent research, developed and commissioned by our expert engineers, is just one of the ways we are working to assure our customers that harmful pathogens are being minimised, providing a cleaner environment for passengers inside the cabin and setting new standards in the ownership experience.”
