The Transport minister, YB Loke Siew Fook had just announced that owners of private vehicles will no longer need to display the road tax (also known as motor vehicle license). This directive comes into effect today (10 February 2023).
As such, Section 20 of the Road Transport Act, which requires that the motor vehicle licence must be fixed to, and exhibited, on vehicles will no longer be enforced by the authorities. According to the minister, this is part of the ministry’s initiative to digitise the services of the Road Transport Department / Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan. The first phase will involve all individually and privately owned vehicle, including motorcycles. However, vehicles owned by foreigners, private firms, commercial vehicles, and public service vehicles will still have to display the road tax.
The digitisation effort is being implemented in stages. At the moment, it involves the road tax and the driving license. This is to ultimately reduce congestion at the JPJ counters. YB Loke is encouraging all who use motor vehicles to register JPJ accounts at https://public.jpj.gov.my/ or in the MyJPJ application to access their digital motor vehicle licence (eLKM section) and driving licence (eLMM section). The app is available for download from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery.
The physical form of driving license is still required for foreigners, holders of learners and vocational licences, as well as for international driving permits.
But if you are not ready for the digital world, you can still obtain the physical form of the road tax and driving license to be carried with you.
“I want to stress that action will continue to be taken against anyone found driving a vehicle without a valid motor vehicle or driving licence, in line with the Road Transport Act,” said Loke. Number plate recognition software and hardware are more advanced now and enforcement officers would be able to check on the status of any vehicle on the road, without the need for roadblocks.
