The fire breathing V8 powered “63 and “55” will have a powerful little sibling in the “43”.
We are yet to see styling differentiations from the V8 derivatives to the entry-level SL models.

Not too much should change in the interior of the SL 43.

With impressive performance from smaller displacements, we are going to expectedly see less and less V8 powered AMG’s.
The new Mercedes-AMG SL models were revealed in October last year portraying the V8 behemoth powered “55” and “63” versions but an entry-level four-banger SL 43 is reportedly edging closer to its international unveiling.

Of course, the iconic AMG growl is only really an experience reserved for the heavy displacement V8 brutes of yesteryear but with impressive power numbers achieved from smaller displacements like the M139 engine powering the A 45 AMG, the new SL 43 might just be fun motoring on a budget.

Unfortunately the engine in question on the entry-level four-banger is said to be the M254 and not the M139. This is the same 2.0-litre unit deployed in the latest C-Class and specifically in the C300 4Matic which also has mild-hybrid assistance. On the performance side of things, a sufficient 190 kW of power while 400 N.m of torque propel the C-Class to 100 km/h in six seconds before topping out at a 241 km/h top speed.

The German brand has opted for slightly better performance from the entry-level four-pot SL as the coupe will employ the electric turbocharger from the AMG GT 63 S E Performance, technology which is dividends of the hybrid Formula 1 era. Reports claim that the high performance upgrade could push power up to a whopping 287 kW, just less than the A 45 S with its 310 kW.

This sounds like more than enough to push occupants of the 2+2 configuration into the bolsters of their seats and it is another step into a downsized direction from the Stuttgart automaker. The C-segment AMG C43 will reportedly use the exact same configuration, in other words, start saying goodbye to that illustrious AMG growl and get used to the little engines with big power.

The roadster will be the first to come out of the SL range as early as this month in Germany.
