A 2.3-ton SUV with a 367-hp six-cylinder turbo gasoline engine: Isn’t it true that this combination is neither economical nor inexpensive? “The GLE cannot be outdone here with its enormous amount of room, the most harmonic driving overall, and the comfortable and quick chassis.”
Author Heinrich Lingner puts the Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic clearly ahead of the Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD Luxus and the VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TSI 4-Motion in a comparison test. But what about the full-fledged Swabian SUV’s consumption? And what are the day-to-day expenses?
Consumption in our research
According to the WLTP regulation, the three-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder petrol engine should consume 10.4 liters. He permitted himself one liter extra every 100 kilometers in the test, resulting in gasoline expenditures of 19.25 euros for this distance.
The environmental impact is greatly reduced: 8.9 liters reduce the energy source required for 100 kilometers to 15.03 euros. When Mercedes Benz is driven sportily, however, consumption rises to 14.2 liters, bringing the total cost of gasoline to 23.98 euros. These figures are based on the current gasoline price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (Super Plus: 1.689 euros per liter as of December 20, 2021).
Costs of maintenance on a monthly basis
Every year, a car tax of 480 euros must be paid to the state for the Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic. Liability insurance for the same time costs 576 euros, according to Allianz Direct *. Those who supplement their coverage with incomplete coverage pay an additional 306 euros each year. A complete update will set you back 1,168 euros.
When all of the separate expenditures are added together, the Swabian SUV has monthly maintenance costs of 467 euros if driven 15,000 kilometers per year. If the mileage is doubled, the cost rises to 838 euros. The decline in value has no bearing on this computation.
This is how it is put to the test.
The consumption of the auto motor und sport test is made up of three separate weighted consumption excursions. 70% is referred to as “commuter usage.” This is a 21-kilometer round-trip commute from home to work. A very cost-effective, about 275-kilometer eco lap accounts for 15% of the total. The sports driver lap accounts for the remaining 15% of the total. The length is about the same as the eco-lap, but the route direction includes a greater part of the highway and, as a result, higher average speeds.
The gasoline expenses are always calculated using the price of the portal “more fuel” on the day the article was produced.
The monthly maintenance expenditures include maintenance, worn components, and vehicle taxes based on an annual mileage of 15,000 to 30,000 kilometers with no value loss. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, damage-free class SF12 for liability, and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, which includes discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free / annual 15,000 km / residing in postal code area 70174 / not under 21 / partner drivers older than 25 years).
