Hennessey Venom F5 Review: America's Hypercar Chases Top Speed Glory

The Hennessey Venom F5 is a truly American supercar and the Texas-based tuner's ballsy follow-up to the Venom GT, except the F5 isn't based on the Lotus Exige like the GT. This, then, is Hennessey Performance fully committing to its very own supercar. Named after an F5 tornado, which represents the highest rating on the Fujita scale, the Venom F5 also aims to blow away the competition by being the fastest production car in the world. To help the Venom F5 top 300 mph and leave the likes of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and SSC Tuatara with bloody noses, the F5 comes with a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 lb-ft of torque. A low curb weight of 3,053 pounds for the Hennessey Venom F5 is made possible by the carbon fiber monocoque, and it has a driver-focused cabin and appropriately low-slung styling. While we have no doubt that the Venom F5 is a great accomplishment for Hennessey, it may be a disappointment if its goal to be the fastest production car in the world isn't verified under the required conditions. Thankfully, this special car has other talents besides a towering top speed.

2022 Hennessey Venom F5 Changes: What’s New?

The new Venom F5 is Hennessey's next supercar with an outrageous claimed top speed of 311 mph. If and when this can be verified, the F5 will officially be the fastest production car in the world. But whether that happens or not, the F5 is still an incredible achievement with its 1,817-hp 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, carbon fiber monocoque, and F1-inspired cockpit. Just 24 examples of the F5 were scheduled to be built; each cost in the region of $2.1 million.

2022 Hennessey Venom F5

No major changes have been made to the standard Venom F5 for this model year as Hennessey continues building each of the 24 units at a rate of around one per month. In August 2022, Hennessey also revealed the Venom F5 Roadster, but we review that model separately.

2021 Hennessey Venom F5

Introduced as an all-new supercar from Hennessey, the Venom F5 is out to break the record for the fastest production car in the world. It hopes to crack over 300 mph thanks to its 1,817-hp V8 and lightweight body with a carbon fiber monocoque.

Specs and Trims: Hennessey Venom F5 Models And Configurations

The Hennessey Venom F5 is an all-out American hypercar producing 1,817 hp and 1,193 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo V8 engine, and aims to become the fastest production car in the world. It uses a carbon fiber monocoque that helps to keep the weight down, as well as more carbon fiber for the body panels. Five drive modes, including Wet and Drag modes, keep this beast optimized for the specific driving environment.

As standard, the Venom F5 comes with 19-/20-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. An intensely driver-focused cabin comes with a carbon fiber and leather steering wheel, aluminum paddle shifters, machined aluminum pedals, and dual digital displays.

Hennessey Venom F5 Full Specs

With its yoke-style steering wheel and 1,817-hp twin-turbo engine, everything about the Hennessey Venom F5 screams speed. Its incredibly powerful engine and the slippery body have been designed to break top speed records in excess of 300 mph, but even if it doesn’t achieve that, this car will need to be treated with kid gloves by new drivers unaccustomed to this sort of power. Plenty of carbon fiber has been used in the F5’s construction, while the cabin gets more carbon fiber mixed with leather. The F5 is also available with a vehicle lift system, Apple CarPlay, and a center touchscreen interface, but the cabin is much more about the driving experience than a wealth of comfort items.

Venom F5 Exterior

Although it unquestionably has the lines and proportions of an exotic, the exterior of the Hennessey Venom F5 isn't quite as outlandish as most supercar designs out of Italy. Unless those butterfly doors are open, the straight-ahead view is actually quite plain, with simple elongated headlights, a carbon fiber front splitter, and nothing overly dramatic besides. That's not to say it's at all boring, though. Things get more arresting from the side, where the F5 is equipped with 19-/20-inch staggered aluminum alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. The exterior rearview mirrors sit on long stalks from just above the front wheel arch, and there are large intakes that feed air to the engine.

At the back, the car has a more dramatic countenance with its high-mounted quad tailpipes situated between the headlight clusters. A mesh-like design covers much of the rear aspect, and there is a large diffuser lower down. The carbon, lightweight engine cover can be removed but requires the somewhat cumbersome removal of several tiny screws; this is because Hennessey chose to save weight by not including a more convenient engine cover latch.

Dimensions

Even lower to the ground than something like the Koenigsegg Jesko, the height of the Venom works out to just 44.5 inches. The other key dimensions of the Hennessey Venom F5 are typical of hypercars of this nature, with a length of 183.7 inches and a fairly broad body width of 77.6 inches with the mirrors included. The wheelbase comes in at 110.2 inches.

Hennessey has been able to keep the dry weight at just below the psychological 3,000-pound mark at 2,998 lbs. The curb weight is just as impressive at 3,053 lbs, making it lighter than the Jesko, which also has a large V8. The Bugatti Chiron is a true heavyweight by comparison, weighing over 1,000 lbs more than the Hennessey.

Exterior Colors

As befits a car of this nature, there are some striking exterior colors available for the Hennessey Venom F5. These include Citrus Orange, Hyper Blue, Speed Devil Blue, Mojave Gold, and Sapphire Blue. The car also looks good in more subdued shades such as Moon White, Flag White, Lausanne Silver, and Pacific Fog Gray. Hennessey also includes pink, purple, and green shades on its website. Customers can play around with the details, such as pairing a gray paint color with orange brake calipers and orange accents around the body.

Venom F5 Performance

This is one of the quickest-accelerating cars in the world, and it may yet prove to be the fastest as well. Its rear wheels alone are tasked with transferring 1,817 hp and 1,193 lb-ft of torque to the ground, but Hennessey has obviously tuned the traction control system to give the car the best chance of balancing power and grip in the available Drag mode.

It all works out to a 0-62 mph time of 2.6 seconds, but the claimed 0-124 mph (200 km/h) time of 4.7 seconds is perhaps even more astonishing. The official 0-60 mph sprint for the rear-wheel-drive Hennessey Venom F5 will likely come in at just below 2.5 seconds. The heavier Bugatti Chiron is about as quick up to 60 mph, but the F5 starts pulling ahead after that.

As far as its top speed goes, Hennessey has claimed what would be a record-breaking figure of 311 miles. Hennessey has already hit 271.6 mph in this car, but the 300-mph attempt is yet to be verified. As things stand, the SSC Tuatara (282.9 mph), Koenigsegg Agera RS (277.87 mph), and Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ (273 mph) are officially faster. However, we'd love to see Hennessey shatter this record in the near future.

Engine and Transmission

Nicknamed ‘Fury,’ the 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the Hennessey Venom F5 produces staggering numbers. The 90-degree mill makes 1,817 hp at 8,000 rpm and 1,193 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm, while the maximum engine speed is 8,500 rpm in F5 mode. A pushrod unit, it has aluminum cylinder heads and canted titanium intake valves, along with Inconel exhaust valves. At 617 lbs, the V8 makes up a fair chunk of the car’s overall mass.

Paired with the engine is a seven-speed single-clutch semi-automated transmission that has been configured to allow the RWD Venom to hit its crazy top speed. While upshifts at full throttle are executed quickly and brutally, the transmission is less refined at lower speeds, as is often the case with single-clutch units of the kind. It’s perhaps the only flaw worth mentioning following a review of the Hennessey Venom F5.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Hennessey didn't set out to build a hypercar that was only good for a mind-bending top-speed run. It also set out to develop something that was balanced and capable of being enjoyably hustled along B-roads. The light body sits upon a double wishbone independent suspension front and rear, along with fully adjustable coilover Penske dampers. Depending on your mood or the driving condition, the Venom F5 can be used in one of five modes: Sport, Wet, Drag, Track, and F5.

To drive, the sheer power and thunderous noise from the F5 are what transfixes you. There clearly isn't much sound deadening at play here, and it doesn't come close to isolating you from the outside world in the manner of a Chiron. That's okay, as the Venom F5 is utterly engrossing to drive. Traction is sensational, the steering is precise and communicative, and despite the fact that it isn't refined, it's not as bone-jarringly uncomfortable as you may expect.

In fact, the car is almost shockingly easy to drive in Sport mode at lower speeds considering the power it has at its disposal. But the first time that you unleash its full potential in F5 mode, you will be stunned into silence at this remarkable car's speed and fury.

Venom F5 Gas Mileage

Hennessey has not published gas mileage estimates for the Venom F5, and these aren't available from the EPA, either. However, we can safely assume that it will be heavy on gas when used in anger, with around 12-14 mpg not out of the question, which means its range won't be great. The F5 produces peak power when running on E85 fuel.

Venom F5 Interior

Unashamedly focused on the driving experience, the interior of the Hennessey Venom F5 eschews luxury for a racy cockpit. The driver faces a carbon fiber yoke-style steering wheel littered with controls for the drive modes, ignition, and more. The missing top section of the rim allows for better visibility of the digital driver's display. Elsewhere, there is a pair of sporty bucket seats that hold you firmly in place. There aren't many comfort features, and storage spaces are scant, but that's probably not going to bother the few customers lucky enough to have bought one of these cars.

Seating and Interior Space

There is only enough interior space for two occupants in the F5. Each person is accommodated in the Hennessey Venom F5’s one-piece carbon fiber bucket seats with cushioning leather pads to save weight, while also conforming to the body shape of each occupant. Customers ordering the car can specify how they want these leather pads to be configured based on whether they have a smaller or larger frame. Bars mounted through cutouts in the seat can be used to attach a racing harness if need be. There is enough seating space for six-footers to be comfortable, and despite the low ride height, the small door sills make ingress and egress simple.

Interior Colors and Materials

Carbon fiber dominates inside the Venom F5. Besides the exposed carbon fiber tub, the material can also be found on the seats, center console, door panels, and dashboard. Smatterings of leather are found on the seats and elsewhere, including the leather-clad grips on the carbon fiber steering wheel. Other touches include aluminum paddle shifters for the transmission and machined aluminum pedals.

Hennessey consults closely with clients when speccing each car, so there are a multitude of colors available. White seats contrast well with all the dark carbon fiber, but the cabin can also be finished in bright hues like red and orange. Texan flags dotted around the cabin remind you of exactly where this car comes from.

In terms of build quality, it's worth mentioning that commonly used controls like the paddle shifters and climate control dial feel tactile and sturdy.

Venom F5 Trunk and Cargo Space

Cargo space in the Hennessey Venom F5 is severely limited, with little more than a small space for some odds and ends behind the seats and a covered compartment in the passenger footwell; customers can even choose to have the latter compartment custom-shaped to accommodate something specific. There is no glovebox at all and door-mounted storage isn’t possible since the doors open upwards. A phone or slim book can be accommodated in a narrow slot alongside the seats, but that’s about it.

Venom F5 Infotainment and Features

Features

The Venom F5 isn’t the kind of car that seeks to pamper its occupants, and most of its equipment is aimed at optimizing the driving experience. To that end, the driver gets access to those delightful paddle shifters, various drive modes, and a digital display. A useful feature is the body lift function that can help the low F5 clear obstacles like steeper driveways, and a simple climate control system is useful in a car that can raise your heart rate – and body temperature – alarmingly quickly. Advanced driver-assist functions like adaptive cruise control aren’t part of the package – in this car, how safe you are is all in your own hands.

Infotainment

Besides the digital driver’s display, the Venom F5 is equipped with a nine-inch Alpine touchscreen interface that provides access to Bluetooth, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It’s not known how many speakers are supplied for the sound system, but they’ll have a hard time drowning out the relentless roar of that V8. USB ports allow for another means of connecting or charging your devices, so most of the infotainment basics are catered for.

Venom F5 Problems and Reliability

There are no recalls for the Venom F5 and it doesn’t have a J.D. Power rating either. Since its production numbers are so limited, we may never get a clear picture of its reliability standards, but Hennessey will likely be quick to sort out any customer complaints if they do pop up.

Hennessey states that the Venom F5 comes with a four-year warranty.

Venom F5 Safety

With its high price and low production run, it's unlikely that a crash test of the Hennessey Venom F5 by the NHTSA or IIHS will ever take place. We doubt that the company has built an unsafe car, though. It's worth noting that it doesn't have airbags, so it can only be sold under the Show and Display title.

Key Safety Features

The Venom F5 is bereft of most modern safety equipment and doesn't even come with airbags. It comes as no surprise that adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and driver monitoring systems are also absent.

Rather, the car comes with features to make the chances of an accident less likely in the first place, be it the advanced traction control system or the powerful carbon ceramic brakes. And, hazards will be less likely in the controlled environments for which the F5 is designed where that outrageous top speed claim can be put to the test.

Verdict: Is The Hennessey Venom F5 A Good Supercar?

America's very own hypercar is a magnificent achievement. Clearly, Hennessey is capable of building its own masterful machine from the ground up, and the new Hennessey Venom F5 coupe is proof of that. Besides the promise of it being the fastest car in the world, the Venom F5 is astonishing at lower speeds too. It provides an incredibly raw, engaging, and tactile driving experience that demands commitment from its driver. That V8 is a monster, and the racy cockpit has been stripped of any distractions. Yes, there are much more comfortable and practical supercars that you can buy, but few can match the Venom F5's sheer sense of occasion. Its exclusivity and omissions like airbags will limit its overall usability, but for the enthusiast that can afford a weekend track toy that can obliterate virtually everything in a straight line, there aren't many better ways to do it than this.

What’s The Price Of The Hennessey Venom F5?

Starting at $2.1 million, the price of the 2022 Hennessey Venom F5 remains far out of reach for the average enthusiast, yet it's still much cheaper than a Bugatti Chiron. Any options or specific client requests can further drive up the Hennessey Venom F5's MSRP.

Additional Packages

Hennessey works closely with each customer to configure their cars. Individual tailoring of the materials, colors, seat padding, and even the luggage compartment in the passenger footwell are all possible. An Aero Pack will also be available for the 2022 Venom F5, although Hennessey didn't specify what it contains.

What Hennessey Venom F5 Model Should I Buy?

There is only one Venom F5 to choose from, but the lucky owners of the 24 models made would've been able to customize their model to their own preferences. And although there's only on V8-powered model, it's as much hypercar as anyone can handle. Choose your color and favored seat, and you're ready to go as fast as most mere mortals can on four wheels – in a controlled environment, of course.
