Once again, Mercedes has created one of the most capable street-legal off-roaders money can buy. Expect to see them in Beverley Hills soon.

Like the last G-Wagen 4×4 Squared, this new one—based on the thoroughly updated current-generation G-Wagen—has portal axles to give it extraordinary ground clearance. Unlike the old one, this one has an AMG V-8 making 585 hp.
CNET first spotted info on the new Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4 Squared on the “G-Class Private Lounge” site, which is ostensibly for G-Wagen owners, though I was able to access it with my “Mercedes Me” account and I don’t own any sort of Mercedes, let alone a G. There is a YouTube video with G-Class product manager Toni Mäntele, who runs through the spec of the car. Not every figure is revealed, but Mercedes does say the new 4×4 Squared has a 45-degree approach angle, 13.8 inches of ground clearance, and a 35.8-inch fording depth. Those figures make this truck one of the most capable off-roaders on sale today, but as CNET points out, those figures are actually behind those of the old G550 4×4 Squared. Still, it’s far more capable than anyone really needs.
The new G63 4×4 Squared retains the standard model’s independent front suspension in contrast with the old G’s solid front axle. Wider carbon-fiber fenders give the truck a more aggressive stance, and while tire size wasn’t specified, Mercedes did say the new G63 4×4 Squared has monster 22-inch wheels. A carbon-fiber LED light bar up top and a carbon-fiber-trimmed spare-tire carrier out back complete the rugged-yet-luxurious look.
Notably, Mercedes says that the new 4×4 Squared will be the last of its kind, and it will only be built in limited numbers. Mercedes is probably only able to sell such an inefficient vehicle for so long.
We’ve reached out to Mercedes-Benz for more info on the G63 4×4 Squared and we’ll update if and when we hear back. Considering prototypes of the new G63 4×4 Squared have been seen testing in Los Angeles, we expect this to be sold here. For reference, the old truck stickered for around $225,000. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see this edge toward $300,000, and it’ll probably trade for even more secondhand.
