Selecting the current trim level for a new car can be a tough decision, one often fraught with serious considerations as you try to find the right balance between affordability and convenience. We tend to hold onto cars for several years so one wants to make sure that you're going to be satisfied in the years to come.
The BAIC Beijing X55 exploded onto the scene late last year and has been well received. It’s easy to see why as this affordable SUV offering from BAIC spearheads their premium brand onslaught with tech, convenience and style in a way that is agreeable and appealing. There are three trim levels on offer and we’re looking at them in greater detail to see which one is the best option.
With prices starting from R404 900, it’s easy to see why the BAIC Beijing X55 is an attractive option for those in the market for a new sporty SUV. The standard list of equipment is rather impressive, even in its lowest spec level. On the safety front, all X55 models receive ABS with EBD and EBA, have Hill Hold and Hill Descent Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and rear Park Distance Control.
All models come standard with LED headlights, induction door handles, a split rear wing, alloy wheels, cruise control and the 10.25-inch infotainment system. All derivatives are also powered by the same 1.5-litre Magic Core turbocharged engine that produces 130 kW and 305 Nm torque. They all employ the same gearbox as well, a 7-speed DCT automatic.
BAIC Beijing X55 trims
The three trims available in the Beijing X55 are Dynamic, Elite, and Premium. Each builds on the equipment found in the model preceding it and in some instances adds additional functionality.
Dynamic
The Dynamic trim already presents a high level of equipment (as mentioned above) and you will still get creature comforts such as electric mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, multifunction steering wheel and 6-way adjustable driver seats amongst others.
Elite
The Elite trim builds on the Dynamic level and adds additional features such as front seatbelt pre-tensioners, heated and folding mirrors, an easy-lift power tailgate, leather wrapping for the multifunction steering wheel, electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, 6-speaker sound system and a panoramic sunroof.
Premium
The Premium model is the most expensive in the range and adds to the Elite trim by inducing the following changes: Park distance control in the front, leather upholstery, memory function for the electrically adjustable seats, seat heating and ventilation, adjustable rear seats, an 8-speaker sound system, and ambient lighting in the doors.
Verdict
The Premium trim does offer you some additional benefits over the Elite model but for us, the Elite model has enough features to make it worth the saving over the premium. The inclusion of niceties like the memory function and leather upholstery can quite easily be done without and the Elite model still offers great features like the 19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof and power tailgate. Therefore, the Elite is our pick of the bunch.
