- BAIC Beijing X55 trims head-to-head: Here's our winner
The X55 is the latest entrant from Chinese automotive brand BAIC Beijing, signalling its intentions to secure volume within the compact crossover segment. Let's look at the three models within the range and choose the best.
Compact crossovers are among the fastest-growing vehicle segments globally, with these high-riding products slowly replacing traditional hatchbacks and sedans in th market. One such product is a newcomer from BAIC Beijing, which is badged the X55. The X55 range is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 130kW and 305Nm of torque which is sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
There are three models in the current range, with R60 000 separating the base and flagship derivatives. We are going to determine which derivative is the best within this new model range.
BAIC Beijing X55 1.5T Dynamic R394 900*
The base model X55 features 18-inch alloy wheels, a multifunction steering wheel, climate control, artificial leather seats, LED headlights, a colour touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and smartphone integration, keyless entry/start and cruise control.
The base model benefits from a host of safety items including 6 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, rear PDC with a reverse camera, ABS with EBA and stability control.
BAIC Beijing X55 1.5T Elite R424 900*
Moving up to the Elite model, all of the niceties seen in the Dynamic variant are present but for R30 000 more you get 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic roof, electrically adjustable front seats and an electric tailgate.
BAIC Beijing X55 1.5T Premium R 454 900*
Moving up to the Premium model and the price increases by R30 000 again, and in addition to featuring the same specification as the Elite version, there is also ambient lighting, front and rear PDC as well as heated and ventilated leather front seats with lumbar adjustment and a memory function for the driver.
So which one is the best?
When looking at the X55 range, one model stands out as providing great value, and that is the base Dynamic version, which gets all of the required specification and was crucially in the sub-R400 000 category at the time of writing.
