And a special glimpse of the smallest Volvo crossover's new interior.
Volvo has shared some new details on the upcoming EX30 electric crossover to whet our appetites ahead of the June 7 reveal, accompanying the interior teasers with our best look yet at the car's exterior. The Swedish brand has always been about functionality and ergonomic design, and the EX30 is no different.
Take the way Volvo has approached the speakers for the audio system, for example. A soundbar spans the width of the dashboard and has been carefully integrated beneath the windscreen. Instead of having several speakers scattered throughout the cabin, the soundbar clusters all of them together. According to Volvo, this still provides a premium audio experience, particularly when paired with the Harman Kardon sound system.
The reason for this is simple. With no need for speakers in the door cards, Volvo has been able to design larger door bins, which provide more storage space. And with no need for additional wiring, production complexity is reduced.

Centrally, there's a 12.3-inch center screen – which is the only screen in the cabin as Volvo has removed a traditional instrument cluster from the mix.
“On the single screen, key driving information such as speed and charge levels are positioned prominently at the top, with navigation, media, and controls easily visible and accessible below,” says Tom Stovicek, Head of UX at Volvo Cars. “We also include a contextual bar that gives you the most relevant functions for your needs at any time.”
Like the larger EX90, the EX30 will ship standard with Google built-in, although it features wireless Apple CarPlay functionality. The sophisticated infotainment system is underpinned by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms.
If you find the touchscreen to be a tad bit overwhelming, Volvo has included a “calm” view, which strips away everything but the essential information, for a less distracting display. The automaker says this is particularly useful while driving at night.

Passenger and storage space is often at a premium in compact crossovers, but Volvo has used every inch of the EX30's cabin. The electric window switches have been relocated to the center console, just like a Jeep Wrangler, freeing up space on the door trim. This further reduces complexity, as both driver and passenger can reach the switches. This setup should also reduce the number of required electric window switches, saving money.
The EX30 goes against the grain with a glovebox that's positioned below the screen. While unusual, this centralized approach to interior design gives both the driver and front passenger access to this storage console. The center console, which resembles a high-end drinks tray, sits in the middle of the cabin and is entirely configurable to suit the driver's needs.

The upper section features a sliding system that can be positioned to hold your drink or mobile phone. Alternatively, it can be moved back for additional storage. A lower tunnel conceals a protective storage area that is perfect for hiding valuables. There's even space for a bag, as illustrated by the drawing above.
Rear passengers also benefit from the center console, with a dedicated storage box that slides out towards the second row. Naturally, there are seatback pockets, too. The cargo area features a brilliant size guide that makes it easier to load larger items in the trunk.

It may be an entry-level model, but the interior suggests otherwise. Sustainable, recycled materials will be strewn throughout the cabin. Volvo has used nontraditional materials such as denim and wool, which should provide a high-end feel.
“New materials add creative textures, color, and personality to the cabin, while smart functionality and a great user experience are the hallmarks of every true Volvo creation. Together, these elements distill the essence of a Volvo into a small package,” said Lisa Reeves, Head of Interior Design at Volvo.
The EX30 will be revealed on June 7, and while these latest teasers provide our clearest look yet directly from Volvo, leaked patent images have revealed the design in full.
