Originally purchased to last only a few years, TopAuto reader Brandon said his high-mileage 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2 just won’t quit.
Brandon tells us more about his immortal Freelander 2 below.
Which model do you own?
I own a 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2 with 375,000km on the clock.
This is only 9,400km away from having driven the same distance to the moon.
When did you get the car?
I bought the car second-hand six years ago when it had about 300,000km on the clock.
I was expecting the car to only last me a year or two only, but it just keeps on going.
What are your three favourite things about the car?
I like that the car has an incredibly smooth drive, with its ability to glide over bumps, while the automatic transmission provides almost unnoticeable gear changes.
The interior is spacious with very comfortable leather seats and high build quality.
The Freelander also has the ability to go almost anywhere – I’ve tried.
Which three things do you like least about the car?
I don’t like the lack of modern technology, such as Bluetooth connectivity and an infotainment system.
It is starting to lose its reliability, too. The power steering pump gave out a few months ago and last month the radiator cracked.
The car is also heavy on diesel, at 10.3-litres/100km – which can get expensive with all the fuel price increases.
What is it like to drive your car every day?
It is a really great drive.
It is the smoothest car I have ever driven, with bumps feeling almost non-existent.
The power the car provides is also great, as it allows me to overtake with ease.
What is the hardest journey you have done with your car?
I took my car on a bush trip in the Pilanesberg area where I tried my hand at 4×4-ing.
I was really impressed by the car’s performance, as it was able to handle everything I threw at it and I definitely put it through its paces.
Would you recommend your car to friends and family?
I would highly recommend it.
Its combination of comfortable driving and reliability is hard to beat.
