Stellantis is planning to retool its Turin factory into an electric vehicle hub, as well as transferring the production of two Maserati models to the iconic Mirafiori plant.
Stellantis is set to use the Mirafiori plant – the one with the banked test track on the roof – to build Maserati saloons between 2022 and 2024. With the factory already producing the Fiat 500 battery-electric car, the Turin factory is set to become the group’s centre of electrification.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported on Saturday that Stellantis might also increase the production of Fiat 500 ICE models by moving production from its current factory in Tychy, Poland.
As it stands, the plant currently builds the Maserati Levante SUV and the Fiat New 500. However, it will also build the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte saloons at Mirafiori, shifting production from Grugliasco – a short 2.5 mile hop across Turin.
“Stellantis is working with determination and alacrity to anticipate and prepare for the energy transition of all its Italian industrial site,” reads a company statement issued on Monday.
The company also hopes that shifting and centring EV production on Turin will give the “country a strategic role among the group#s main domestic European markets.”
All of the 1,100 workers will move from Grugliasco to Mirafiori by 2024 with no overall impact on jobs in the area. However, Stellantis did not provide any details about what would become of the Grucliasco site.
However, with the Grugliasco plant in action for less than a decade after it started producing Maserati cars, it would be strange for Stellantis to shutter the site entirely.
