A spy photographer has caught the next-generation Maserati Gran Turismo testing with a new electric powertrain. Eliminating any doubt, the coupe pictured here shows a charging door and no traditional tailpipes. Marked with Folgore (‘Lightning’) script, the new coupe will join the battery-powered Folgore variant of the upcoming Grecale crossover in the brand’s diversifying range of available power options.
Though the marque aims to phase out its gasoline offerings by 2026, three powertrain options will drive the 2023 GranTurismo into the new era: a conventional gasoline engine, a hybrid option, and full-electric traction. Maserati has not released specific details, but an expected arrival later this year would make the GranTurismo and GranCabrio the first EVs in their segment.
Beneath the abstractly-branded camouflage, we can see a recognizable GranTurismo shape with graceful lines and a traditionally long grand-tourer footprint. From the side, typically trident-inspired wheels immediately identify the GranTurismo as a Maserati.

Maserati’s signature wide-mouthed grille stands at the front, but its intakes will take different forms across the lineup. Expect to see a traditional, free-breathing grille for engine cooling on gasoline and hybrid models, but in the case of this electric example, the absence of a conventional radiator has allowed Maserati to block off segments of the design feature for aerodynamic efficiency.
Inside, shoppers and daydreamers can expect ample space and plush grand-tourer luxuries. While the gasoline-powered models will surely prove a hoot, electrification will likely provide the truest luxury experience yet, affording quiet running for sightseeing serenity.
No word yet on whether this generation will use Dodge Caravan parts-bin switchgear like the Levante, but keep those eyes peeled when we get a full look later this year.
