The car, took around 1,500 hours to build. Which seems reasonable for such a massive transformation.
A few years back, Maserati built a factory Quattroporte wagon. Sort of. But it was extremely limited production and very tough to find. So what happens if you can’t get the original and you have a suitcase full of cash? You build your own. And eventually, you need to sell it.
In 2008, Carrozzeria Touring, the long-running coachbuilder, built the Bellagio Fastback based on that year’s Quattroporte. It was a stunning wagon that did an excellent job of preserving the best of the original car’s styling and then adding to it. But only four of the cars were built. This isn’t one of them.
The seller of this one says that the person who commissioned it had wanted one of the four Bellagios. But they missed out on one of those cars when it came up for auction in 2013. Rather than wait for one of the other three to hit the market, they took things into their own hands.
After approaching some big name coachbuilders in the UK, and baulking at a near $400k estimate, they took a different approach. A bodywork specialist who had a great deal of experience restoring classic Jags, Astons, Dinos, and other exotics. Someone not afraid to hammer out some panels.
Instead of a 2008 model, they used a 2015. Cutting the rear quarters and most of the roof. It was mocked-up in person and in CAD to decide how to alter the styling and to find the best look for the car’s tail. The ad says that the hardest part of the whole build was the electrics. It is an Italian car, after all. But not just boring wiring issues, it was trying to get the tailgate motors to talk to the original car’s system.
The car, which they’re calling the Cinqueporte, took around 1,500 hours to build. Which seems reasonable for such a massive transformation. While you might expect one of the brand’s sonorous V8s, this car actually uses a Maserati diesel. A 3.0L turbocharged engine that makes 271 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. Why not be stylish AND economical, right?
In the photos, at least, the car looks like it could have been built on the assembly line along with the rest of Maserati’s new cars. And maybe it should have been. Or maybe this much cool is too powerful for even an Italian production facility. Either way, if this is as much of a must-have for you as it was the original owner, it’s for sale in the UK.
