Next-generation seven-seat family SUV gets aggro new looks in unofficial renders
Here’s our first unofficial look at the looming 2023 Mazda CX-80 thanks to a render by Japanese outlet Spyder7, which depicts the next-generation large SUV donning a far more aggressive look than the current Mazda CX-8.
Already confirmed to be underpinned by an all-new platform, the CX-80 is expected to be powered by a longitudinally-mounted straight-six petrol engine and diesel engines, each paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Depending on the variant, the new powerplants will drive either the rear or all four wheels, and an all-paw plug-in hybrid four-cylinder powertrain is also expected to materialise at some stage.
As for the styling, Spyder7’s render has taken clear inspiration from the already revealed Mazda CX-50 and upsized the package accordingly.
Mazda CX-50
Dispensing with the Mazda CX-8’s typically rounded and gentle features, the rendered Mazda CX-80 takes on an altogether chunkier look courtesy of some aggressive contouring on what a seven-year-old might call its cheeks.
Matching these bold creases are a set of thin but chunkily-frame headlights flanking a slimmed down radiator grille.
Beneath said grille is a new trapezoid lower intake and imitation ‘skid plate’ to help ramp up the aggression – a fitting move given the gutsy powertrains that will be lurking under the bonnet.
Either side of it is a swollen front lip which tucks around the bottom of the aforementioned cheek contours.
Current Mazda CX-8
Whereas the current CX-8 looks like a high-riding family wagon, its eventual replacement – in the render at least – appears genuinely ready for a fight with its large SUV competition that will include the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.
Confirmation and release timing for the all-new Mazda CX-80 are yet to be announced by Mazda Australia, however, the Japanese brand’s local division has confirmed the company’s new ‘Large Product Group’ model offensive will be kicked off Down Under by the already spied Mazda CX-60 later this year.
