“A car that embodies the joy of driving”
At the core of the Mazda Iconic SP concept is a lightweight and compact two-rotary EV system mounted in the centre of the vehicle, purposed to provide electricity to the electric drivetrain.
Information regarding the inner workings of its proposed powertrain is scarce, but the firm already relies on a single-rotor electric drive unit in its MX-30 e-SKYACTIVE R-EV SUV. The powertrain that would underpin the SP concept could feature a similar architecture. Additionally, this two-rotar power unit is capable of using a variety of fuels, such as hydrogen or renewable fuels. The firm says that the SP concept would have a 272 kW power output and a total weight of 1 450 kg.

Mazda proposes a compact sports car with “excellent” driving dynamics, in part due to the positioning of the two-rotor power unit coupled with a 50:50 weight distribution. In terms of its form factor, the SP concept’s sultry silhouette is 4 180 mm long and 1 850 mm wide, which is slightly longer and broader than the real-world MX-5 but is 80 mm shorter. Furthermore, the SP concept has a 2 590 mm wheelbase, whereas the MX-5 features a 2 310 mm wheelbase.
