A teaser video released by Maserati confirms the brand has begun testing its first electric powertrain, which will feature on electric versions of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio.
The short clip shows a prototype car being put through its paces at Maserati's development centre win Modena, Italy, and it appears to have similar styling to the GranTurismo, the combustion engined version of which ended production last year.
Maserati refers to it as an “experimental vehicle” and says it has been developed at its new Modena-based Innovation Lab.
The centrepiece of the clip is the noise the car is making, with Maserati stating that “the music is changing.”
In a statement, Maserati said: “The next full electric models will have a distinctive signature sound, already a unique attribute of all Maserati cars equipped with traditional combustion engines.”
Testing of the new EVs will take place on the track and roads surrounding Modena.
Maserati's production facilities are set to benefit from a major update, as part of FCA's £4.43bn investment programme. The first model to arrive will be an updated Ghibli, coming later this year, which will feature a hybrid engine for the first time.
The electric GranTurismo is set to arrive in 2021.
