- Powered by 730bhp twin turbo V6 engine
- Production limited to just 62 examples
Maserati has released some teaser images of its new, track-only supercar called the Project24. It’ll be based on a modified version of the MC20’s architecture, upgraded with a host of performance tweaks and an arsenal of FIA-compliant safety equipment. Just 62 examples will be built.
The Maserati Project24 will be powered by the same 3.0-litre V6 engine as the MC20, albeit with a fresh pair of turbochargers and a new dry sump oil system. The upgrades will increase the engine’s output from 621bhp to 730bhp, all of which will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
To create the Project24, Maserati will also put the MC20 on a crash diet, binning most of the road car’s luxuries and wrapping its chassis in some fresh carbon fibre bodywork. The brand says it’s targeting a dry weight of around 1,250kg and a power-to-weight ratio of more than 500bhp per tonne.
To control that much performance, Maserati will fit the Project24 with a set of enormous Brembo brakes, tuneable front and rear anti-roll bars, adjustable racing dampers and lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels shod in slick tyres. The new body also features adjustable front and rear wings which Maserati says will allow the car to develop a lot of downforce.
Other features include an FIA-compliant roll cage, a fire extinguisher system and a 120-litre racing fuel tank. The interior will be like a Le Mans racer’s, with buyers getting bucket seats, six-point safety harnesses, a racing steering wheel with a built-in gauge cluster and telemetry recording system. You can even have a dashcam to record your hottest laps.
Despite the Project24’s lightweight design brief, Maserati elected to fit it with an air-conditioning system. This is an odd decision, as air-con is normally the first component you remove when you’re trying to build a track car. But in Italy, looking good is as important as going fast and it simply isn’t acceptable to climb out of your race car bathed in sweat. That would ruin your expensive designer driving gloves.
The Project24 is the latest chapter in Maserati’s impressive comeback story. In the past two years alone, the company has released the McLaren 720S-rivalling MC20 supercar, the Porsche Macan-rivalling Grecale SUV and has even confirmed it’ll launch a pure electric replacement for the Gran Turismo coupe in 2023, which will compete with everything from the BMW i4 to the Porsche Taycan.
