Kia has launched its fourth product — Carens — for the Indian market. A three-row MPV, the Carens price in India starts at ₹8.99 lakh and goes all the way to ₹16.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, India. This means the Carens undercuts most of its rivals such as Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra Marazzo, Maruti Suzuki XL6, and more. As a matter of fact, the Carens is so aggressively priced that it is closer to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which is one of the best selling seven-seater vehicles in the country. So, if you were planning to buy Ertiga, then the chances are that Kia Carens will now be on your list. But which of these is cheaper to buy and by how much? Let’s try to find that out.

But before we do that, let’s take a look at how the specs of the two vehicles compare.

Kia Carens is available with a choice between a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (113 bhp with 144 Nm), a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated diesel engine (113 bhp with 250 Nm, and a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine (138 bhp with 242 Nm). While all the three engines come with six-speed manual gearbox as standard, the diesel and turbo petrol engines get the option of six-speed automatic transmission and seven-speed DCT gearbox, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, however, comes with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine available with the smart-hybrid system. This powerplant puts out 103 bhp and 138 Nm of peak torque and can be had with a six-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is also available with CNG option.

Before we delve into Carens’ and Ertiga’s prices, let’s take note of the fact that Kia Carens is longer, wider, and taller than the Ertiga. And of course, the Carens is significantly more feature-rich than Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.

Kia Carens 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual transmission starts at ₹8.99 lakh and goes all the way to ₹9.99 lakh. This variant doesn’t get the option of automatic transmission. Kia Carens 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine with manual transmission starts from ₹10.99 lakh and goes all the way to ₹16.19 lakh. And as for Carens 1.4-litre turbo with DCT automatic gearbox, its price ranges between ₹14.59 lakh and ₹16.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

In comparison to this, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga with manual gearbox will cost you between ₹8.13 lakh and ₹10.14 lakh. And in case you want Ertiga with automatic transmission, then you will have to spend between ₹10.13 lakh and ₹10.86 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

This means that Kia Carens’ base variant is roughly ₹86,000 costlier than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga base model. But for this extra price, you get a more spacious vehicle equipped with features such as six airbags, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, all-four disc brakes, electric tumble for the second-row seat, AC vents for all three-rows, and more.

Kia Carens vs Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: Diesel variants price comparison

Kia Carens diesel with manual gearbox costs between ₹10.99 lakh and ₹16.19 lakh while Carens diesel AT variant will set you back by ₹16.99 lakh. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, on the other hand, isn’t available with a diesel engine.
