- Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend a single Land Rover SUV
If you’re in the market for a new luxury SUV, head to the experts to find the best options. For a long time, Land Rover has made some popular high-end SUVs. However, Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend a single Land Rover SUV. CR reviewed three models from the automaker in the luxury compact SUV segment and another three in the luxury midsize SUV segment. The luxury compact and midsize SUV segments are competitive, but it’s still surprising that all Land Rover models fell short.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover | Land Rover
In the luxury compact SUV class of vehicles, Consumer Reports recommends a wide variety of models. For example, the 2022 Buick Envision is at the top of the ranks, but it also recommends the Porsche Macan, Acura RDX, Infiniti QX50, and BMW X3. Out of the many recommended models, they all have one thing in common: they’re not a Land Rover.
Land Rover offers three vehicles in the luxury compact SUV segment. They are the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, Discovery Sport, and Range Rover Evoque. Each one is similarly-sized and has a lot in common. One of the things they each have in common is the gripes Consumer Reports has with them. For example, very poor predicted reliability, a low ride quality, bad visibility, unintuitive controls, and being overpriced.
In addition, the Discovery Sport suffers from a stiff ride and unimpressive agility. The Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque received almost identical scores from CR. Moreover, the Range Rover Velar performed a bit better but far worse than its rivals. Even the higher-ranked Velar has the same stiff ride, poor visibility, high price, etc.

2022 Land Rover Defender | Land Rover
In the same vein, none of the Land Rover luxury midsize SUVs are recommended by Consumer Reports. Reviewed models include the Land Rover Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover Sport. Like the compact models, all of them share many things. Unfortunately, CR isn’t a fan of most of those things. For example, the bottom-ranked Defender has very low predicted reliability. It also suffers from many of the same problems as compact models.
For the Defender and Discovery, controls are unintuitive and distracting to the driver. However, the Discovery uniquely suffers from second-row seats that feel too low and have awkward access to its third row. Meanwhile, the Defender’s braking, agility, step-in height, fuel economy, and rear visibility could be much better. Compared to other models that reach six figures in their upper trims, the Defender falls very short.
Lastly, the Range Rover Sport is in a league of its own. Despite a higher rating than the other two luxury midsize SUVs from Land Rover, it has many problems. For example, a stiff and choppy ride, loud exhaust noise, poor fuel economy, and it’s historically unreliable. Overall, it’s best to skip the Land Rover luxury midsize SUVs for a more reliable model, like the Lexus RX.
Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend a single Land Rover SUV
In conclusion, Consumer Reports does not recommend the Land Rover SUVs. Moreover, the luxury compact and midsize models fail to impress similarly. For example, all vehicles have confusing controls that are difficult to use while driving and maintain a low-quality ride. Furthermore, reliability is an issue for the brand in general. Hopefully, in the future, some of these problems will be ironed out as this popular luxury brand tries to win back customers and reviewers alike.
