The Chery brand is officially in Malaysia with the launch of Chery Malaysia, and 2 SUV models i.e. Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5. Chery’s presence in Malaysia had been planned for quite a while as part of its global expansion strategy, with investment and preparations made to establish a local assembly programme as well as a dealership network. Upon the launch of its 2 models, Chery already has in its network about 31 dealerships nationwide, with a significant number already open and ready to serve. Chery is the first Chinese automobile company to export complete vehicles, CKD kits, engines, and manufacturing technologies and equipment abroad, and has been steadfast in implementing its international market strategy for over 20 years. Among the Chinese brands, Chery is thus far consistently the leading vehicle exporter to the global marketplace. Currently, Chery also has 5 major global R&D centres, with a research and development team of over 7,000 people, including technical experts who have previously served well-known automotive companies.
Additionally, Chery has built 10 major factories and 1,500 overseas service outlets worldwide. Its global sales have exceeded 11.3 million vehicles, with over 2.4 million overseas customers. Particularly in markets like Chile and Brazil, various Chery models have maintained leading positions in their respective segments, while in the Middle East and Mexico, it is one of the fastest growing brands.
In 2022, Chery hit a year-on-year growth of 68% in its total overseas markets, with annual sales surpassing 450,000 vehicles. This is not only a record high but also marked Chery’s 20th consecutive year as the top Chinese brand in passenger car exports. In 2023, Chery will continue to accelerate its internationalisation plans. The Omoda 5 alone is set to expand its presence to over 30 countries.
This internationalisation plans includes making Malaysia a regional hub for its right-hand-drive vehicles. In ASEAN, Chery has plans to establish production bases in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand for a range of vehicles with differing powertrain options i.e. internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles. Chery sees Malaysia as having an advantageous geographical location with favourable economic environment. It plans to bring more flagship products as well as a wider range of powertrain options to Malaysia. The company has also confirmed plans to launch the Omoda 5 EV and TIGGO 7 PRO here in 2024 and continue to diversify its product range to cater to various demographics. “Chery strongly believe that the prospects of the Malaysian automotive market are highly potential. Chery is committed in growing together with the automotive industry in Malaysia,” said Mr. Shawn Xu, Chery International Vice President and President of Chery Malaysia. “The ASEAN EV market is forecasted to grow at almost 33% per annum to US$2.7 billion by 2027. Mass electrification from the automotive sector fits in well with our national ESG and net zero agenda from the manufacturing industry’s perspective. To that end, the introduction of Chery’s new electric vehicles (EVs) models will support Malaysia’s efforts to decarbonise our economy, and will contribute to the growth of the EV market in Malaysia. We are also proud that Chery has chosen Malaysia as the Regional Hub for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) Vehicles for their Southeast Asian and Oceania markets. MITI and its agencies further welcome Chery’s commitment to invest an initial capital of RM170 million for their expansion here, which will provide 4,000 high paying, high-skilled jobs for Malaysians in the next 5 years,” said YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Malaysia. Datuk Muhammad Azmi Zulkifli, CEO of InvestKL added: “Chery’s decision to establish their Regional Hub for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) Vehicles in Greater Kuala Lumpur (GKL) testifies the value of GKL as thinking epicentre underpinned by a rich ecosystem of skilled workforce, state-of-the-art facilities, and positive development for innovation. Our progressive policies are set to bolster the EV industry and reflect Malaysia’s commitment to aligning with global trends of sustainability while enhancing our competitiveness as a nation.”
At the launch, Chery announced that it is offering a comprehensive warranty policy for Malaysian customers including a 7-year (150,000 km) vehicle warranty and a 10-year (1 million km) engine warranty for the first 3,000 customers.
