After months of preparations and previews, Chery Malaysia has launched the Omoda 5. This B-segment SUV will come in 2 variants i.e. Omoda 5 C (RM108,800) and Omoda 5 H (RM118,800). Omoda is Chery’s range meant largely for the global market. This SUV is locally assembled at Inokom Kulim and the first deliveries to customers is expected in August.

The 1.5L turbo engine with cover removed.

Physically, the Omoda 5 measures 4,400 mm long, 1,830 mm wide and 1,588 mm tall, built on a wheelbase of 2,630 mm, and sits on 18″ alloy wheels with 215/55 R18 tyres. Powering it is a 1.5L turbocharged engine producing 156 hp and 230 Nm chanelled to the front wheels via a 9-speed CVT (continuously variable transmission). There is an Eco and Sport driving mode option while the electrically powered steering (tilt and telescoping) also has mode adjustment. The suspension set-up gets MacPherson struts in front and a Twist Beam at the rear.

The Omoda 5 is the first model to use Chery’s new ‘Art in Motion’ design language which plays with light and shadow to give it both static and dynamic balance. Distinct is the borderless diamond-cut geometric matrix grille which extends from the middle to either side.

When it comes to kit, the Omoda 5 comes standard with a pair of screens i.e. a 10.25″ dynamic meter cluster and a 10.25″ infotainment touchscreen that offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The infotainment unit in the C variant is connected to 6 speakers while the H variant gets an 8-speaker Sony premium audio system, and both include an intelligent voice assistant (English).

Other notable features include remote window operation, engine start and cooling activation, front armrest with cooled storage, dual zone climate control, wireless charger, sun visors with mirror and illumination, door mirror heating, 64-colour mood lighting, 3 USB ports (including a Type C fast charging port in front) and a 12 V outlet, rear view camera, auto dimming rear view mirror and acoustic glass.

The range-topper H variant adds on a faux leather upholstery (C variant uses a faux leather and fabric combo), driver’s seat with 6-way powered adjustment, ventilated front seats, powered sunroof, hands-free powered tailgate, sequential turn signals, welcome lighting, and lighting effect (front and tail lights).

Standard safety features across the range include 6 airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assistant System, Brake Override System, Electronic Stability Programme with Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control, Hill Descent Control, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Both variants are also equipped with an ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) suite which features Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Emergency Lane Keeping, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow, Front Collision Warning with Vehicle Identification, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Headlamp Automatic Control, Lane Departure Prevention, Integrated Cruise Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. The H variant however, gets the addition of Speed Limit Assist / Speed Control Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition / Intelligent Speed Adaptation, and a 360-degree panoramic view camera.

Exterior colour choices are Khaki White, Dark Black and Phantom Grey for the Omoda 5 C variant, while the H variant gets the Phantom Grey, Khaki White and Dark Black options with Red Stripes, as well as a Khaki White with Black roof (also with Red Stripes).

Chery is offering a vehicle warranty of 7 years (or 150,000 km, whichever comes first) and 5 years of free service (free labour). The warranty follows the vehicle and as such, is transferable. For the early birds, they will enjoy an engine warranty of 10 years (or 1 million km). This is limited to the first 3,000 buyers.

From the 3,001st customer on, it’s back to the 7 years (or 150,000 km). If you really want the 10-year engine warranty, you can top up RM2,000 to enjoy the extended warranty package.
