At the Malaysia Autoshow 2023, Chery Automobile Co., Ltd had formalised with Sime Darby Berhad a partnership to assemble Chery vehicles in Malaysia.
The local assembly of Chery vehicles is expected to start in the 3rd quarter of 2023 and will be done in Sime Darby’s Inokom assembly facility in Kulim, Kedah. Chery Corporate Malaysia Country Director Mr Leo Chen said the partnership with Sime Darby will strengthen its presence in emerging markets within Southeast Asia, a region that has encouraging potential growth.
“It is a very exciting and thrilling partnership. It creates valuable experience in the automotive sector across the value chain, which would make this a great partnership to grow together,” said Mr Chen. Chery Corporate Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a local subsidiary wholly-owned by Wuhu Purui Automobile Investment Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Chery Automobile, will be the Approved Permit (AP) Franchise Holder to undertake the local assembly of Chery vehicles in Malaysia for the domestic and export markets.
On Sime Darby’s end, the Inokom assembly plant will be expanded to cater for Chery’s local assembly activities.
“We are proud to announce our collaboration with Chery, and to join Chery’s global family of partners. To be entrusted to assemble cars for Chery speaks volumes of the highly qualified and competent Malaysian talent we have at Sime Darby and our ability to provide meaningful value to our partners. We look forward to being part of Chery’s journey of continuous innovation,” said Sime Darby Berhad Group Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson.
“The assembly portfolio is a key element in our growth strategy for Sime Darby Motors and this partnership supports this,” he added.
Last year, Chery held preview sessions for its Omoda 5 and Tiggo SUVs and gained encouraging feedback. In preparation for entry into the Malaysian market, Chery is working on setting up 30 dealerships nationwide, which are currently under renovation.
