Appealing to the needs of the audience is what performance SUVs are all about. The lucrative segment has produced some astounding models from automakers like Porsche with the Cayenne Turbo GT, Ferrari and their latest Purosangue and Aston Martin with their powerhouse DBX 707. Further down the pecking order are the likes of Maserati, the Italian brand that has a history as rich as the origins of the logo fashioned onto the grilles of their models.
With the Levante marking its entry into the SUV segment, the Italian automaker has given its hand at a more compact and accessible model bearing the name Grecale. Bringing the Maserati nameplate into accessibility for aspirational buyers, the new model will usher in a new era for the automaker as it has quietly joined the local lineup for Maserati ahead of its official birth into our market.
Available in three trims, the Grecale will be pitted directly against Porsches compact SUV offering; the Macan. Powering the entry-level GT is a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol motor with mild hybrid technology rated at 223 kW which means it can achieve a 100 km/h sprint in 5,6 seconds before going onto a top speed of 240 km/h.

In the middle of the range is the Grecale Modena which employs the same displacement, engine configuration and same mild hybrid system tuned to 246 kW which can achieve the 100 km/h sprint 0,3 seconds quicker than its GT counterpart. The top speed on both models remains the same.
At the top of the list is the Grecale Trofeo which has a detuned 3,0-litre Nettuno engine from the MC20 supercar. This 395 kW motor enables the high-riding Maserati to hit 100 km/h in 3,8 seconds before topping out at 285 km/h.
While the configurator is live and any derivative of the Grecale can be virtually specified, no pricing accompanies the models. This, along with an official date for orders is still undisclosed. Get better acquainted with the model on the Maserati website.
