Volvo has added the popular navigation app Waze to its in-car app library, becoming available to all Volvo vehicles running the Google operating system.
“The best of Waze’s real-time routing, navigation, and alerts are accessible with nothing more than a one-time setup after downloading in the Google Play Store in your Volvo car,” said the Swedish manufacturer.
“No matter who’s driving the car and what device they use, navigation with Waze will be just one simple tap away.”
How it works
The Waze app is now available on the Google Play Store and accessed via Volvo’s infotainment system. The programme is free to download and available to users of all smartphones, including iPhones and non-Android devices that support it.
Once installed and activated, the driver’s desired route is displayed on the central screen and offers all the same abilities you’ve come to know on the mobile version of the app, thus minimising dangerous actions such as phone-related distractions.
However, the manufacturer did confirm that features and services may differ depending on the market.
“The in-car Waze app utilises more of the centre screen in the Volvo user interface you’re most familiar with, making navigation more comfortable with a bigger and bolder eye-level display area,” said Erik Severinson, global head of Volvo’s new car programmes and operations strategy.
Severinson said the automaker will continually expand its in-car app offerings to bring a wider variety of abilities and programmes to its customers in the future, allowing for deeper personal customisation of their vehicles.
“We’re committed to continuously improving the experience in Volvo cars through our in-house software development and ongoing collaborations with tech companies such as Google and Waze,” he said.
To ensure the newest feature functions without a hitch, Waze also worked alongside Volvo to perform numerous virtual tests before to prove functionality before launching it to market.
“This dual testing allowed the team to deliver a high-quality user experience before launching in customer cars today,” said Severinson.
