2022 saw a newly revamped Volvo XC60 hit our market. With two new engines and a few new styling and tech options on the table, we were quite excited to take new the new XC60 on a test.
Scandi Styling
The Volvo X60 makes heads turn everywhere it goes. Its Scandinavian style and sculpted lines set it apart from other luxury SUVs. With a host of enhancements for the 202 year, this iteration of the XC60 introduces a pair of new engines and hybrid power to the lineup as standard for every model.
The B5 and B6 engines replace the T5 and T6 engines in the Volvo XC60. But these are not just replacements, they bring mild-hybrid technology into the mix as standard. Under the hood of the B5-badged XC60 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid system making 184kW. The B6 is powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder as the B5, but a supercharger is added for more oomph. Unlike the previous T6 setup, which incorporated a turbocharger and a mechanically driven supercharger, the 220kW B6 has a turbo, an electrically driven supercharger, and a 48-volt hybrid system
We took the 2022 B6 Inscription derivative on test to see if anything else has changed.
Styling
Resplendent in its Silver Dawn Metallic paintwork the XC60 cuts a striking stance. Upfront the B6 gets a new grille and modified front bumper as well as upgrades to the radar, camera, and driver-assistance system sensors. The headlights are LED and feature the iconic Thor’s hammer DRL’s, on our test until these form part of the Light pack which includes a set of LED fog lights and lighting tech that auto high beams at night and “bends” the light beam when cornering.
Another option fitted to our test unit was the stunning Graphite diamond cut 5 spoke 20″ alloy wheels which succeeded in bringing the arches closer to the ground. Outside these highlights, it still has the same XC60 lines and design we’ve come to love.
Interior & Space
The interior appointment is a luxury affair with soft supple leather paneling and seat coverings. Volvo knows how to trim for comfort. There is ample room for 5 adults and all their luggage. The boot swallows 854l of cargo which is expandable to 1432l once you drop the rear seats.
Comfort & Convenience
If Volvo can trim for comfort they definitely know how to equip for luxury. Pride of place in the dash is a new Sensus infotainment screen that controls everything from the Bowers and Wilkins audio system to the heating and massage functions of the front seats. Small elements such as the laser cut crystal drive selector to the reflections in the piano black trim ooze luxury. Everyone will benefit from the additional Lounge pack that incorporates 4 zone climate control and a panoramic sunroof.
Performance
As mentioned in the beginning the XC60 B6 is fitted with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine that is coupled to both a supercharger and turbocharger as well as a 48 volt mild hybrid KERS system. This equates to 220kW and an unbelievable 420Nm. This is in turn mated to Volvo’s 8 Speed Geartronic transmission which has silky-smooth shifts and is barely noticeable.
Fuel Economy
Volvo claims the B6 will return 7.6l /100km on a combined cycle drive. We found it to be a little bit heavier at 8.9, averaged across combined urban and suburban driving. This means that from the 71l fuel tank, you can expect 900km of range.
Safety
One cannot talk about Volvo and not have safety be a major element of the vehicle’s build. The XC60 is equipped with Intellisafe Assist, which handles object recognition such as cyclists and pedestrians, the Intelligent Driver Information system which takes care of traffic signs and other vehicles. There is a 360-degree camera, Park Assist and Volvo on Call should you become stranded.
Price
The XC60 B6 AWD in Inscription trim has a base price of R 1 00 200.00. As tested with the few extras the price climbs to R 1 168 649.00
Volvo XC60 is sold with a 5 year / 100 000km warranty and a 5 year / 100 000km full maintenance plan
Competitors
The burgeoning mid-size luxury SUV market has no shortage of competitors for the XC60. The Germans have the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC while the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Lexus NX, as well as the forgotten about Porsche Macan, are all vying for buyers’ money.
Verdict
The Volvo XC60 isn’t going to blow your hair back, it’s a Volvo, it’s not meant to be crazy or exciting. What it is though is a plush executive lounge on wheels that will easily cross the country in style and comfort.
